944 Sunroof

Hi, how can I get the sunroof out of a '86 oval dash 944? The fuse keeps blowing and I need to flatten the roof and reseal it to stop it leaking (I think, you know what leaks are like...)
Pics if possible please, thanks.
 
Hi Paul, Does the fuse blow which ever way you operate the sunroof switch ie:tilt or remove?I would check if the sunroof drain holes are blocked first for your leak.

There's a way to open and close it manually, it's detailed in the hand book. From memory (I can't check as I've removed mine[:D]) you just remove the carpet that covers the motor and on the side you can see a hole where you can use a socket (can't remember what size) to turn the mechanism.

It should actually come with a little key attached to the motor which you unclip, push in and turn. I do believe a flat head srewdriver does this job as well.
 
If you take a look at www.clarks-garage.com has a good sunroof write-up... Else remove the two gears close the roof and put them back in. I do remember someone saying you can convert to 924 manual operation ?

Don't drive the car with the roof not secure at the rear, otherwise it will lift when zooming along [:(]
 
I've converted over to the manual latches, it's not a perfect solution as the headlining isn't quite the right shape but it does work. Currently mine will pop open when it wants to but that's mainly caused by my car being so stiff! I'm sure I could adjust this problem out but it's only a temprary measure until I permanently seal in a sunroof panel.

You can buy the latches from the US via eBay for about $20 and fit them in 10 minutes (although it takes longer to remove the electric mechanism if you want to). There are lots of threads on the conversion on Rennlist if anyone is interested. From memory I think it only saves a couple of kilo's but as I never used it there were no downsides for me.

Well, it seems to be working again so I go the roof out today. Think this is where my rear leak is coming from and I think it is due to the curvature of the roof as it now leaves a gap between the seal and the surround. I suppose the only solution is to take it out and put a pile of heavy books on it to get rid of the curvature?
 
If it is the same as mine then the sunroof is fibreglass. Try a magnet on it.

There are adjusting screws which adjust the tension and therefore the curvature.

Thanks, Fred. I took the black inner lining off (three screws and about eight or nine black plastic rivets round the three sides) and ended up with what is in the photo below. For the benefit of others, the two tensioning wires run up and down the left hand sides and have adjustment screws at the bottom. I loosened off the left hand (back) one but it didn't seem to make much difference. However, there must have been some tension on it as it had dropped a couple/three mils when refitted. It is still proud but there isn't a gap, and the fact it isn't under tension anymore means I'll hopefully be able to bend it with weights into the curvature I want.

I think you dont have to remove the lining to adjust the screws - I also think that the later cars dont have the facility,
I could be wrong though,

with the key in the ignition - but not turned on - operate the switches.
The latches retract and allow you to push the roof up from inside with one hand. As long as you've undone the front latches you can then move the panel rearwards and remove from the roof and place in your roof-panel bag.

When i remove the roof on my 944 i raise the roof to the highest point the pull the latches down at the front near the sun visors, i then get out the car and pull the arms which lift the roof up to the side (in towards each other one at a time)then just slide the roof of the front wind deflector and thats it... When you put the roof back in place it over the front wind deflector and rest it on the arms which lift the roof, i then again pull an arm at a time i towards the other and then pull it the oppiste way once the arm has gone inside the sun roof this then ensures that when you close the roof from in side the arms are locked in correctly and it locks down nice and tight.... Sound long winded but it works for me and its quick.. Hope this helps
 
Be careful Spic01 - that's the way to end up with stripped gears which can be a right pain to replace and adjust [:eek:]

AsSteve said make sure the ignition switch is in position 1, press the up button and the latches retract DOWN into the roof. Refitment is the reverse.........
 
yea, I remember being really confused when I tried taking it out after having read the procedure in the manual the day before. Also it didn't help that my then boss, who used to own a 944, showed me a very wrong way to remove it.

However once I actually went over the instructions and tried them straight away, I found it was really quite simple...

easy to be confused, but it is not hard once you get it...

good luck, and lets hope we get some sunny weather so you can make the most of it!
 
I knew there must have been a better way, if the summer returns this year i will give it ago the OP way ... Thanks PS...
