944 Supercharger Project

So I just bought an Eaton m45 supercharger. I'm going to be putting it on a 944 2.5 8v. Should push it north of 200hp with shed loads of torque. The car has one of my AugTronic DME's, wasted spark coil pack, turbo injectors, rebuilt bottom end and cylinder head.

Will be posting a build log up on here. Should make a really quick car. I'm going to fit a turbo intercooler possibly with water injection driven from the DME for high boost levels. Been thinking about this for a while, can't wait to make it happen :D.

It's a prototype for a customers 924s, stripped out and caged for the road. Should be a fantastic little machine :D. Its basically just a case of getting it mounted and belted, the ECU is already in place with AFR and knock detection so once its mechanically installed it should be a piece of *cake* :D.

From the moment that your ECU became a reality I have hoped for a normal compression ratio'd blown engine with water/meth injection!

I thought about this again quite recently when you mentioned that you couldnt yet do 16v M2.x DME, because this would particularly suit a 944S.

I can stick a 16v lump in an 8v car no trouble. I've just picked up a 2.5 16v with a melted wiring loom :)

Tom - I'll be following this with interest... any reason why this would not work on a 968 engine?

Good luck mate

Mick

I had thought about this with my old 2.7, I had planned to drive it using the balance shaft pulley and a toothed belt. I sold the charger as the fabrication put me off. I have to say I like high compression with boost, makes a nice lag free drive. Interesting project.

It has been done to a 968 before.

I know a couple of people who have tried to supercharge 968s with varying success - temp management seems to be a major issue - although I'm not aware of anyone who has done water injection yet - Tom, lead the way!

How is this project going?

I have a refurbed m45 sutting here surplus from when I had myEunos. What made you pick the m45 over something like an mp62?

I'd have thought the m45 might be a little restrictive/small on a 2.5, certainly even on the 1.8 mx5 engines, if peopke were chasing more power they would fit an mp62.

If the M45 is off a Mini them Im sure that itll be too small for a 944 engine. I saw the working out somewhere... Off course, with a Tim Lane bracket and some trickery itll work very well on an MX-5.

Doesn't matter what it's off, in terms of it being a 45 denotes how much air it can flow iirc. The mini one was just a bit different as it had the water pump drive on the back, possibly couple of other things.

TR Lane? He makes a good rollbar for the money but don't think many were happy with the quality/accuracy of his sc kits.

I made my own based on Barry Spiders CAD drawings but sold my Eunos before I got it all fitted.

Its off a merc 230, it makes 190hp on that car and I doubt they worked it too hard. I think 200hp should be reasonably achievable. Standard 944 2.5's are around 145-150 bhp so its an improvement not to be sniffed at and it will gain torque everywhere. It should also remain reliable and very usable. I am going to fit wasted spark and some modern injectors which will really complement the conversion.

I have designed the mounting bracket which will hopefully be made up this week or next then its a piping exercise. Once its mounted and plumbed things should progress more quickly :D.

You not using it on a 16v engine? Heard someone had good result runing a turbo on stock na with 6 psi

2.5 16v makes 190hp with a few missing from the stable I would say 180+ 30% = 240 which is 968 power

Had I said "if an M45 is off a Mini", rather than "if the M45 is off a Mini" it would have been clearer, sorry. My point was that the Mini application part doesnt flow enough air for a 2.5l engine.

Be nice on a 16v engine too :) I've got the s now so maybe next project :)

An M45 on an MX5 (1.6 or 1.8) will hit a celing of around 200bhp with supporting mods (megasquirt, bigger injectors, fmic and smaller pulley), but after that most either turbo or fit an MP62.

Eaton site suggests it is suitable for 2.0 to 3.0 engines, suppose it just depends how much boost you want to get out of it, as the faster you spin it and you approach the limit of the charger, it will run hotter.

What kind of speed are you planning to run it at? Same pulley ratio as a Mini, or are you going to use an undersize pulley?

I think an SC conversion on an S would be awesome!
