944 Tie Rod/Track Rod End - Replacement?

Hi All,

Looking for any experience had on replacing the Track Rod End and the Tie Rod/Track Rod. I'm getting a lot of play in the front offside wheel due to play in this component where it joins the rack, and it'd make sense to do the track rod end at the same time.

I've seen them sold here --- https://iapunitedkingdom.com/catalog/product/view/id/172347

Has anyone seen a better supplier of them? Tried Frazerpart but not listed.

Also, has anyone carried this work out themselves? Looks like all you have to do is pull the rubber boot back and undo the nut that connects the track rod to the rack, then break the ball joint of the track rod end and take the whole thing out, then replace.

Many thanks in advance!

Simples as that. It's a doddle as long as you have a ball joint splitter. Try Eurocarparts or GSF. They are competing like mad at the minute. Up to 60% off ECP this weekend and 53% off GSF.

Thanks! Was thinking about trying ECP tomorrow anyway, they do say "Any Part, Any Car" - fingers crossed they'll have it in stock!

Just noticed if you check fitment detail then the Lemforder is up to 85. Do you have square or oval dash? The other is out of stock anyway. Try GSF car parts.

A tip for you - carefully examine the installed length of the assembled track rod and then compare your components for overall length against the old ones. The objective is to install the new components in the same location as the old so that overall length of the track rod is identical to the length it was when removed. If the new parts are identical to the old you should be able to count threads showing before removing the old part and install the new to the same location. If the parts differ a little then you rely on overall length only. This should save you a trip to the alignment shop (or at least an emergency trip with the toe totally out of whack).

FYI, I just changed my rack (S2) and so had to swap the tie rods from the old rack to the new. I bought track rod ends (not the rods) from my OPC at £35.21 each.

I forgot to add, that getting the tie rods off the rack was a bit awkward - and I had the rack on a bench at the time. The tie rod ball joint is threaded on to the rack and then a small tab is peened into a groove to stop them loosening. So you have to be in a position where you can chisel this free before you undo the threaded joint. Also, it advises in Clarkes that you dont put any load on the rack body when doing this. I had mine safely clamped in a vice and it was awkward enough!
