944 transmission

well, my 944 is making a fair bit of noise from the gearbox. My first thought was that a wheel bearing had gone, but when the shop had a look they told me that the noise was coming from the gearbox. They popped it on a ramp for me to have a listen and it's definitely the gearbox. So i'm in need of a used one. It's really gone from "they all do that sir" to "what's that noise?".

How much do the transmissions vary year to year? Would a transmission from an S be a straight fit for a 1986 Lux? I see from Clarks Garage that the gear ratios are slightly different, but not very much. Or should i be holding out for a transmission from a lux?

My 944lux 1986 also makes what I would call a tramping noise from the rear axle or gearbox when I decelerate, so I would also be interested on any replies to this one, sorry I can't be of any help to you mate.
I thought it was the bearings, or drive shafts.
