944 Turbo - any advise?

Hi all, I'm looking to get my hands on a late model 944 Turbo, with a plan to turning it into a fast road/trackday machine. PDS Bellevue were advertising one on autotrader some time ago, and I think they still have it. It's a black '91 car I think and is owned by the garage owner. Does anyone know anything about this car? It's got a cage and sparco evoII seats, which is just the sort of spec I'm after, but it's an ex trackday tuition car and I know he has had it at the 'ring before. I think he was after £5900 for it which seems a good price at 103k miles?

They're really too old to support a direct price to miles relationship like you might be able to do with a nearly new car. They take the miles well and it's entirely possible a well maintained 150k miler will be a far better car than a 103k miler with lots of track time. Of course some of the best 944s around are track cars that get money no object maintenance and loads of new parts.

As it stands a decent full history road car with those miles would be cheap at £5,900. A decent well maintained track car would also be cheap at £5,900. An ex track tuition car sounds to me like something run by a business which means it had to earn its keep. In other words it will have done probably more track time than a private individual's track car and will have been run to a cost far more than a privately owned car.

I'm not saying don't consider it, but based on the limited info you have provided it doesn't sound great. If you have more detail or someone knows the car we can be more specific.

Its still worth looking at as not an unreasonable price.

?You need to inspect it thoroughly and drive it, if you are happy at this stage. I would recommend an inspection by someone who knows there 944 Turbo's and go from there.

Gordon is right - don't discount it, but tread carefully.

Mine is still in the cow-shed (as far as I know, I haven't even seen it for about 5 months). If you want to up your budget a smidge and then fit your own engine it could be yours [;)]. As I said on anothe thread once the Hearse goes I'll get it running again and then decide what to do with it.
