944 Turbo Ignition Issue?

Hi Guys

Picked up a fairly nice 944 Turbo (late model, 93k miles) last month. FSH (last service 4k miles/2 years ago). Done about 1,500 miles in last 3 weeks and first time it missed a beat was yesterday. First noticed a slight hesitancy when going up from 2nd to 3rd, slight delay of about a second from putting foot down to power coming on. Never thought any more of it till about 50 miles later same thing happened again, this time more pronounced followed by a bang (misfire) and black smoke coming out exhaust for a couple of seconds. After that it was fine.

First thought was that the ignition maybe dropped out temporarily? Anyway, as I'm new to the world of 944's could one of you knowledgeable chaps shed any light before I start randomly replacing bits!

Hi Stuart

Couple of things you can check, the DME relay in your fuse box can cause problems , it's one of the first things that people check and always worth having a spare in the car anyway. Also check the two plugs behind the engine which connect to the crank sensors, these can work loose and will cause the symptom you describe also check your earth lead too.

The 944 turbo gets very hot and the wiring thus suffers more than most, our cars are getting old now so again worth checking all the connections, AFM ( air flow meter ) and TPS ( throttle position switch) connections are worth checking too.

Thanks for that. I will check later. How do I identify the DME relay and am I as well just buying a new one? If so do I need to go to Porsche for it?

I am already addicted to the boost! I had several RS turbo's when I was younger but this is a different ball game!

Hahaha.. that last comment made me laugh regarding RS turbo's that is... nothing against them.. I was a ford man myself before seeing the light so to speak, it's just that it's an ongoing battle in my household as my two eldest sons are ford nutters and always telling me my car is too slow. Mind you with one RS turbo running 294bhp/ 340lb torque and the other boy with a Cossie with well over 400bhp they may have a point.. j/k of course...:)

As for the DME relay this can be bought from many places is isn't dear..long time since I've bought one but you should get one around £20 I would guess, either from an OPC or places like euro car parts too, not to mention the good speacialsts listed in this forum on one of the sticky'd post's.

Oh to identify it you should have a list on the reverse side of your fuse box cover but if memory serves me right it's the one closest too the windscreen and you , ie right hand lower corner when looking at it from passengers wing.

Lol, brings back memories. My last RST was a 2.1zvh with over 250bhp but sadly it never went for more than 2 miles without something falling off! Had a 300bhp cossie too but the 944 is such a breath of fresh air as it comes out the box a proper sports car.

No comparison for me!

I will get one of those DME relays then for the glove box.

Your boys will grow up eventually!

yes my son's is a 2.1zvh that he built himself...it was on the rollers for first time two weeks ago.. then made 255bhp.. h e came back very unhappy and said he knew it had far more in it... anyway a few tweeks and some work on the throttle ( which had a problem it seems) and he then got the 294bhp on thursday. He reckons he can get it to at least 320.. who am I to disagree the guy is a genious when it comes to cars and more so with electrics.. he does his own mapping.. if i had the money i'd buy him a rolling road and set him up... you never know.. one day perhaps..:)

I'll be down to see him with my Porsche soon if I don't get it fixed!

Get it serviced [:'(], on a more constructive note welcome to 944 ownership [;)]

Don't want to raise any alarm bells, but you should be able to find most of this searching the forum.

  • Check when belts AND pulleys were last replaced, should be at least every 3 years, 36,000 miles.
  • Has waterpump ever been replaced (old pumps have been known to sieze)
  • Also goes without saying, oil, brake fluid, spark plugs also distributor cap and rotor and ignition leads.

All belts and pulleys were done at 87k in late '06. There is nothing in the history mentioning water pump.

Not checked the plugs, cap, arm or leads yet.

It is going into RPM in Glasgow for a service soon!

If it were me I'd be having the belts, pulleys and waterpump replaced along with the front oil seals.

Ignition problems were discussed recently, worth changing the rotor and distributor cap along with the plugs and then maybe leads if you are experiencing ignition problems.

Also have a look at the rubber pipe work especially the connectors around the intercooler hard pipes if it was happening at fairly high revs in the 2nd to 3rd change. Also check that the dump valve diaphragm is ok if you can suck easily on the small vacuum pipe at the top its knackered - there should be resistance.
