944 Turbo may be going to a new home, not sure if I am doing the right thing, but fancy a change

Hello All

I have been thinking for some time of having a change with my car.

Mad really as it pretty much been fully overhauled over my 6 years of ownership and
now looks pristine and drives beautifully.

I have even just had the AFM rebuilt by Frazer Part Porsche as my car was not running exactly as it should have at
the rolling Road day on The Wirral (I need to chase up Porsche mag about when that article is going in)
I will let everyong know the results next week of the AFM refurb as this is a very cost effective repair over
a new one and I think will work much better than just moving the needles inside the Bosch unit.

Had a very nice guy around to look at it yesterday who already has a 944 and had a nearly new S2 back in 1991,
he has looked at lots and thought mine stood out a mile, which was nice to hear. Although did make me think what am I doing!!!!

I have been looking at Maserati 3200 which I think look beauiful and the couple I have seen with custon rear quad boxes
sounded absolutely amazing. 3.2 V8 with twin turbos and 370bhp 490nM of torque equals a very rapid machine.
They also feel lovely inside with leather everywhere. I have not actually driven one yet only been a passenger in 2.

Anyway if mine ends up staying for now I will not be upset, just hope I do not regret it.

Right off to change the new AFM and tinker out in the sun!!!!

Wondered where you'd been!
There is an article in this months Porsche Post about the Dyno Day.
I and at least 2 of the others who went, still haven't been contacted by the other mag, so it was decided to use it.
Good luck with whatever you decide to do (hope you keep the 951 though!)

Maserati 3200. Lovely car but the initial purchase is just the down payment with a Maserati. If you just do a few miles at weekends then fantastic. Do not expect an Italian car to be like a Porsche though.
 
I too have heard horror stories (on PH from owners) about the running costs - as you'd expect they're almost the same as a Ferrari when it comes to spare parts, I suppose half the battle is finding a specialist that charges a sensible hourly rate. I do like the look of the original boomerang light versions though!

I love the looks AND the sound [8D]

....but don't do it, yours is a real keeper and I bet you'll love it even more with the AFM fixed
 
My dad had a Gransport and bar an electrical fault due to the tracker install it didn't miss a beat. That said he got rid of it before it was due a service and a new clutch, as the interval for these being changed is ridiculously short!

My research shows that in real terms they are not a lot more expensive to run than a 944 Turbo.

I only do around 3,000 miles a year so anything I buy will only be a weekend toy.

I have spent a good deal of time with Marios at Autoshield in Manchester. this guy is the font of
all knowledge when it comes to all things Masser....

Of course when you do look around on forums a good deal of the time you only ever see the horror stories.

Servicing is on a par with the 944 Turbo and typically costs £400 to £500 per service. A 12k 944 Turbo service is around £320 ish.

Cambelts are same time limits as per the 44 Turbo at 4 years, but all specialists suggest 3 years as per the 944 Turbo. these are between £250 to £400 so cheaper than a 944.

A set of front brake discs is £300 so not cheap, but again buy right and one that has had a recent change and I would see many years of service.

Another main concern is the rear cranksaft seals. If the car has not been using Selenia Racing Oil (these engines were actually designed around using that specific oil) it can accelerate wear, especially on the manual gearbox, when people start the engine with their foot on the clutch pedal. This is a big no no. It starves oil from that rear seal and accelerates the wear. it is easy to check for crankshaft wear on these vehicles.

Yes clutches can go early on city cars and around £850 to £1000.

And of course high mileage will have the usual suspension issues, which are more expensive to sort than a standard 944 Turbo.

Rear exhaust boxes are only mild steel the rest of the system is stainless, so rear boxes rot quickly.
This just gives you an excuse to put a fab Rear quad stainless system on and really hear that twin Turbo 3.2 V8 Howl!!!
And they can be had for around £500 to £750, just look at the promax Stainless exhaust prices!!!

So yes like any super car caution is necessary and pre purchase checks are paramount, but like a 944 turbo, buy the right one
and keep on top of it and fingers crossed you do not get any issues.

And the noise from the engine, Well what can I say[;)][;)][;)]

Life is short and if you fancy a change and are sure go for it!!!,i have been fighting with myself for a couple of years about getting something Italian,there is something very special about them,the Boomerang rear light Maseratis look awsome...........
