944 Turbo SE exhaust (250bhp turbo)

Guys, looks like it might be time for a new exhaust, mine has finally got a big fat hole in it which is looking pretty un fixable!

I would have liked to keep a genuine box on it, but at £900 they can keep it!

So my questions to you guys are...

What after market exhaust do you think is best to buy. How much and where from!

If I am going to change it I want a single oval finisher I think, so it is at least similar, and I don't want it to sound like I am driving a halfords spec nova. I would obviously like a bit more power, but then who wouldn't! The car is currently completely standard, last rolling road saw 272bhp and 249 ft lb torque, so I guess I need an exhaust to work nicely with that output.

What power increases have people noticed (if any).

Any advise will be greatfully received,

Rich. ( I wonder how long I can hold off the engine mods.....)

ESS (essential styling) do a large oval, and makes the car sound more purposefull without being too much louder. They did a before and after dyno when developing the system (on my car) and found an increase despite my car not being in full health at the time - turbo was dying. Later my car also produced more power than otherwise similarly tuned cars with standard exhausts.
Hayward and Scott will build you a custom system - at a price.
IIRC Longlife exhausts will build a system - one of the old titanic listers had one built and was happy with it - round tail pipe though.
AFAIK neither H&S or Longlife use a dyno for before and after comparisons.

I can recommend the ESS oval exhaust as well (it is cheap being its major plus point)

It can look a bit Chav when you first put it on, or if you polish it [:-], but it does age down to look far less conspicuous - mainly when the inside gets black.

Several of us have them and, when you get two or three large oval cars together, the original tail pipe looks pretty weedy.

Thanks for replying, The ESS sounds like it could well be worth a look. Did you guys notice any increase in performance, on the rolling or real road?

Would just a rear section fit to the standard turbo front, or would I need both sections?

I don't think I have a cat on mine, as it is an 88' so is it worth getting the matching de-cat pipe?

I bought the ESS twin pipe and that fitted fine onto the rest of the standard exhaust - though I have since splashed out on the rest of it too.

Have been very pleased with it though never did a before and after power test.

Hi Rich,

There is also the Dansk Stainles Steel rear box as sold by Bert Gear and others. It comes in two types - standard and Sport though they both look the same and are very good quality polished stainless steel with a similar to standard sized oval rear pipe.

I bought a standard one two years ago from Bert at £160 and it's still doing fine and gleams blingtastically when polished up with Autosol. Some people have reported fitment issues and 'knocking' if they have non standard rear suspension and anti roll bars

I have a spare nearly new backbox , is a steel RPM one, contact me if you are interested,do you a stonking deal[:D]It came on a car i just bought and have put it back to standard spec.
Cheers,
MarkK

Hmm, I can't decide if its best to hunt for a standard exhaust to keep the car original. It is sitting with 73k on the clock, and I am thinking of letting her go later in the year.

By the sound of it Marks offer would be the best then. No point in paying for stainless steel if you aren't going to get the benefit.

I Think the exhaust is on RPMs website,it is squareish in design, not too loud at all,if you want it make me a reasonable offer its yours, it is at Promax in Milton Keynes where you could pick it up (or i am sure if you arrange with them they could pop it on in two seconds)it is a cheap soloution,it has not done many miles at all and should polish up as new,let me know if it will help you out.(I am going to Promax tommorow to pick up my super stock new but old Turbo [8D]Yay!)

I wouldn't expect any performance improvement from a backbox change at all. In fact I doubt any improvement from a full exhaust system would be noticeable. I always think that you upgrade your exhaust to unlock more potential from other upstream mods/improvements. I noticed no performance improvement from my ESS exhaust whatsoever. It does sound much nicer than stock though.
