944 turbo thermostat housing gasket.

My 944 turbo has a water leak from the black plastic elbow, on the front of the water pump thermostat housing. Is there a gasket there, or just sealant? Can't find a gasket online.

Hello - the little plastic elbow has an O ring seal. It is tiny and turns to dust over time. A new elbow comes with a new O ring or you can buy them separately. I purchased the elbow with O ring as I "heard" the elbow can crack from age + heat cycles but just used the O ring. I'm sure the part no was in the PET - sorry don't have it handy.

Thanks for the info. Have seen exploded view of the waterpump, and noticed the O ring close to the elbow.
Edit to add- Part appears to be 999 707 283 40. Round seal 28 x 2.5.
Can't find it searching suppliers though?

I've had several of these. Leaked when I first had the car...plastic elbow and flange relying on the O ring to seal is a bit optimistic, they always leak. Took that first one of and flatted the flange (less O ring) with emery paper on a flat board. At least the metal sleeves around the bolt holes are at the same level as the flange, ensuring full compression of the O ring. No leaks!

New one fitted by my Indy with new water pump ages ago, but I asked for the return of my "fettled" one afterwards. New elbow weeps a bit, but I still have the one that doesn't!!

I got a new elbow and seal not long ago from OPC, wasn't expensive. Make sure you get the turbo specific one as it flows to the turbo water pump and a standard one is blanked off.

I took the plastic elbow off a 2.7 pump I've got, to see how the O ring fits into it. That O ring was very brittle, and there was sealant on the joint. On PET it seems to show a small thermostat under the plastic elbow, does that come with a new pump?

Thanks. Messaged Nottingham Saturday and Cambridge this morning. No response so far...

Housing 951 106 313 00 £5.80
O ring 999 707 283 40 £2.52
but as the O Ring has a size next to it you should be able to get that at any enginnering shop, 28mm x 2.5mm

As Graham said, the ferkin thing does still drip. Undecided whether to try and find a thicker O ring, or just knock .5mm off the housing. After the event, I put a straight edge across the flange of the spare I've got. And it's not exactly flat [].

Good point. Flatting off the flange to also remove c.0.5mm would compress the O ring better. And I also checked mine for flatness with a straightedge before and after fettling!

I used a piece of glass, coarse wet & dry down to finer using latter with some water-plastic always "creeps" with that design but no good if bolt bushes are longer than the plastic flange thickness.

Did that, we'll see if it still leaks. If it does I reckon I'll make a gasket and try that too.

I gave up, and used some silicone as well as a new O ring. Removing material from the flange moved the little thermostat in the elbow closer to the water pump. I think that would space the elbow out, and defeat the object of skimming the flange.

That irina fella on youtube mentioned using sealant there. If it's good enough for him...
