944 Turbo VIN number TEST

Guys

I have someone from Australia interested in my car and its very important that the car has to have been built before the 1st Jan 1989. I presume the only way of finding this out is if anyone knows the break point on the VIN numbers for a 89 model Turbo as mine was registered 1st April 1989 and VIN is K plate and number is 100689.

Can anyone help or point me in the right direction please, thanks.

From your series number Id suggest that you have a slim chance... The only way to be certain is to ask Porsche to confirm the date of manufacture though. As this will be needed to register the car in Australia you may as well obtain it now. For your own piece of mind, you can look at the date stamps embossed into all of the trim components. Dont be surprised to see that some items were a year or two old when they were used, but if you find any original part with a Feb.89 date then the game is up...

One further point: when Ive had to do this in the past I have always contacted Porsche in Stuttgart, as opposed to Porsche Cars GB. When I last enquired PCGB were charging £20+VAT for the service, which Porsche AG were happy to provide for free.

Hi Gordon,

I think Barry Smith has the contact details, either get him through the office or contact number in Porschefile or Porsche Post.

Thanks Simon

Do you have a tel number, email address or contact address please.

Sorry Gordon, I've been away from Porsches for so long and I hadn't kept anything like this. If you're in a hurry then telephoning PCGB will probably be your best course of action. I would imagine that the people who deal with heritage enquiries will be able to give you a rough idea quite quickly (although I'll wager that they'll charge you for written confirmation...).

If you write to PCGB Ltd, Bath Road, Calcot, Berkshire RG31 7SE, their customer services department will be able to help you. I understand that they now charge £55+VAT !

Eek!

That's Porsche Cars GB, not Porsche Club gb. I don't know if going through Barry would be any cheaper, or if it would even be a possibility, but worth a call first I'd have thought.

Wow that came as a shock !!!!

Last year when I enquired about the production of my Nile Green unusual colour I went through the club and was called back by Porsche GB who were more than helpfull. confirming only 6 for UK .

When I asked for further details proof of ownership was required for obvious reasons but no mention of cost or payment whatsoever [8|]

options purchased and production dates are on my list of things to do it is fitted with 8 way comfort seats (until I put my new Sports seats in) and I wanted to know if they are original option spec or have been added later.

A dealer can give you the options from the chassis number, Will. If your local isn't friendly then ask Exeter next time you order a part from them.

Alright Gordon found this online might be of use according to this info the Australian is looking for a J on the vin :::

The chassis number (or world manufacturers code) is embossed in the engine compartment firewall and is also found on the A-pillar in front of the driver. This 17 character system was used starting in 1981. Each character (or grouping) is explained using this example, taken from a 1988 Porsche 944 Turbo S.

Gordon,
I think you will find your car is pre- Jan '89 build.
My car is approx 100 after yours in chassis number - and mine is a Jan '89 Registration.
This does not give you the actual info you are looking for, but it would indicate that when you get the info, it will be positive.
good luck
George

Mine is 180 before Gordons in chassis build numbers and was registered in mid January 1989.

The VIN number itself can only tell us that it was built after the factory reopened from their summer break in August 1988 and the VIN numbers all moved on from J to K. Hopefully Porsche will come through with the goods for the exact date, but it does look likely to be pre 1/1/89 to me when you look at Georges details
