944 Wings

Good Morning all,

The time has come to have my pride and joy sprayed!

Both wings are totally shot, as those of you who saw her at the track day at Brands hatch may have noticed!

Elliot at Porkaparts has been on the lookout for wings for the past couple of years. Passenger side no problems, he has one put aside. Drivers side Nada!

It looks like design 911/Porscheshop are both coming in at around the 800 pounds mark + for a new wing - I have also just asked my local OPC for a quote. This seems rather expensive, although I will go there if I have to.

I notice that Porsche shop, and indeed Club Autosport are offering GRP wings at around the 150-170 pound mark each. Has anyone tried these? I am hesitant to go down the fiberglass route unless I have to, but there just doesn't seem to be much else available out there in reasonable condition at a reasonable price.

Thanks for your experience and advice

I got Club Motorsport wings bonnet and badge panel earlier this year, and you have to knock them with your knuckles before you even know it's not metal. BUT it all depends upon the skill of the assembler/finisher my man is ex Marcos body shop. Don't use anyone who hasn't got real GRP quality workshop experience.

£720 for a new Lux wing is just rude.

I'll attest to the excellent panel fit of the GRP wings on the front of Gerry's machine. You wouldn't know without some very close inspection. There is an argument that steel front wings help protect you in the event of a heavy front accident and changing them for GRP ones makes the car less safe but I've never heard this backed-up by facts so put it down to internet bullsh t.

Oli.

I was thinking I would import from the USA No rust and has the correct factory underseal and paint
just not sure if the pressing is the same for the side repeater? Anyone know

Seach the tipec site as their magazine editor (poprock) put grp wings on his turbo before he sold it. Looked ok iirc but were a real pita to fit.

Either Ebay

like this one which needs some work :

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Porsche-944-early-o-s-drivers-wing-/351816531892?hash=item51e9e63fb4:g:rngAAOSwaB5Xud8d

Or one of the Breakers: 9 apart, Douglas valley etc...

Surely there will be a 2nd hand drivers wing about, are you totally shot beyond repair.. ?

Fibre panels are Ok, but not brilliant and as Gerry says very dependant on the fitter / body shop expertise...

I used AutoKraft Coedpoeth - Near Wrexham who fitted and painted Fibre wings / bonnet / sunroof panel / front & Rear bumpers
on my 924 Lightweight project

Ben put fibreglass wings on WUF when he had it resprayed, I remember the guy that fitted them saying he would rather have repaired the original metal wings.

Yes that's a common comment, they are used mostly by the Race guys for their lighter weight
and not for road /show or general long term use.

There should be a reasonable supply still of wings about from one of the popular wells stocked breakers
or on ebay and private sales too.

There's also a guy in Telford "CMS" that Break Porsches... Google and try him..

I might be selling my drivers side wing off of my 1984 2.5 race car, the wing has no rot or damage. I have just crashed the car, near side damage ! So I may consider fibre glass now and therefore both wings would be replaced.
Location Leicestershire.

His came from http://teilecar.com/ in Germany and I believe they were made in Poland. I saw them after fitment and painting at a Tipec show and they did look very good indeed.

Many, many new cars have GRP wings from the factory now so it's nothing new and scary to be worried about as long as the quality is god and the painter/fitter knows what he's doing

What looks good with fresh paint and filler may not be the same in the fullness of time...
