Depending on what you want it for, and how much work you can do yourself, I'd suggest sticking to an 8-valve Lux. That budget will buy you a decent Lux, and give you £500 - £1000 as a fund for fixing it over the first year. Don't be tempted by a cheap S2 or turbo, as you could well double the budget in repairs. The 8-valve cars are great, the bodywork tends to wear a bit better as the S2/turbo have a rubber trim that traps dirt and moisture in the wings and sills. Still check the sills very carefully, you could spent £1K per side repairing them easily. Not the end of the world on a Porsche, and they rust far less than mose '80s cars, but better to buy one that's in one piece to start with. Shine a torch down the vent in the door pillar to see inside the sills, the underseal can hide a multitude of sins from outside. Mechanically, they're no different from any old car in most respects but if it's had a clutch, head gasket, fuel and brake lines, any other work recently then that's great. Most parts are pretty reasonable but, with labour, a clutch can be £1K for instance. Belts are every 4 years/40K miles, often the time factor gets forgotten, and a water pup every second change is sensible. Best thing is to get someone to go over their car with you. Get to one of the events in the faqs section and there will be plenty of cars with very experienced owners.
