944s Clutch

The clutch on my 87 944s is little (quite a lot) high. Is it adjustable or is it heading towards replacement? Are they available cheaper than the £400 Ive seen online so far?
Also roughly how many hours labour should I expect to get charged to get it fitted?

 
Have a look at a few websites - 9xx, JZ etc. The clutch tends to be a menu item and for an S it will be 900-1000 fitted. Clutch prices are around the 400 you mention but its a pita job to do hence the price, unless you can do it yourself.

Five hours would be very good going. I took a whole weekend, although that was the first time and things would get alot quicker second time 'round. No part of the job is at all hard. It's just a lot of work. Very satisfying if you have the time, and you can save a pile of cash, but it's a big job. Frazerpart was by far the cheapest when I bought my clutch. Well worth a look. And do the clutch release bearing and think about the quill bearing as well while you are in there. And possibly the rear main seal (although mine was fine and I didn't want to disturb it.) Oli.
 
I got the clutch for my S2 from Frazerpart Porsche and he was the cheapest at £450 plus postage £15 came next day. The guy I used is ex Redline racing and well versed with most Porsches and did mine including supplying and replacing the rear linkage on the gearbox and got the cat welded as it had split for £450 so total £900 but the linkage was £120 and the welding was £25 so around £300 to fit the clutch and it took him about 7 hours. I think from memory there is adjustment on the pedal height related to the assistor spring adjustment and also the main clutch cylinder piston adjustment, certainly a picture in my Haynes manual but very hard to do unless you know a midget mechanic or have the seats out.

I base that on how long the mobile guy I used to use (before he retired) allowed at the roadside. I can't see how it would take any longer in a workshop, with a lift etc., assuming no other problems arise. That is for someone who has been doing this for years, I'm sure when you've done hundreds, Oli, you'll get quicker! [;)]
 
Five hours, single-handed, by the roadside, is VERY impressive! Yes, I guess you would get quicker with time. If I think about how much time we spent reading the manual, looking for things that were there but hard to spot, discovering bolts that we didn't know about etc etc etc then we wasted a lot of time. Not to mention the huge palaver putting the gerarbox back on when the drive shaft seemed to stick out of the torque tube too far ... (solution is to put your foot on the clutch and push the end of the drive shaft - it moves into place perfectly.) Yes, it will get quicker with practice. Or perhaps I'm just a naff, slow mechanic! Oli.
 
My Clutch was £425+VAT for the kit approx 18 months ago. Unfortunately I don't have a labour charge for the clutch alone as it was replaced at the same time as a lot of other work was done (full 48k service, belts and rollers, new engine mounts plus a ton of other stuff) My total labour charge was £730 but that was for all the work. Howard
