944's First European Holiday

Hi Guys
Thought I would put up some pictures and a bit of text about a European road trip I did in May in my 944 with these guys http://www.nurburgringuk.com/. Also on the trip was a Caymen s and two E46 M3's

I have only had the 944 since last November, its been used for 4 track days in that time but not much else, so the prospect of an 1800mile European road trip was a bit of an adventure especially as it is full caged, fixed seats, no carpets or radio.
In preparation I had the belts changed and a service as this was coming up to four years since the last change was done. I even washed the car for the first time!!!

Early start on a Thursday morning and an easy drive across northern France before stopping at the old GP circuit at Reims for some pictures and lunch. The pit row parking was almost full with group of Ferrari's returning from a champagne tour. Pleasant bunch. I had no idea what any of the cars were, but my fellow travellers appeared quite excited by them.
Our first night was in Baden Baden at the top of the Black Forrest, so a bit of a long drive from Reims in the pouring rain with no radio and ringing ears, but the meal that night was worth the wait.

Off to Stuttgart that morning to visit the Porsche Museum. For anyone that has not gone it is really worth a visit, so fantastic cars and they have a Le Mans special on until July with a good display of famous cars. A couple of 944's on display, but no 964's which was a bit sad.

That afternoon we headed further south through the Black Forrest on the B500 which was a superb road and relatively clear with good sight lines etc. Lovely sunny weather, mid twenties, absolutely perfect. A nights stay in Friburg and another good meal.

Saturday saw us drive into France and explore the Vouge mountains with some nice twisty roads, but with minimal run off, cobbled hair pin turns it was a bit sketchy at times, however still fun. We then drove up along the French German boarder before heading north to Nurburg.

Sunday another early start and the morning was spent at a public day at the Nurburgring. This was my fourth visit but by far the busiest I had experienced. I am a great fan of the track, but personally have gone off the public days. Next time I return will only be for a proper trackday. We drove to Spa that afternoon and enjoyed a route I had done several times before which is always really nice, more so on a sunny Sunday afternoon with no work the next day.

Monday was the day of the whole trip I had been looking forward to the most. A full day at Spa.

The day was being run by RMA and unusually we had the briefing on the Sunday night so could just arrive and drive on the Monday morning from 8.30am. Its the first day I have done that allows overtaking on either side and around bends. I was a bit worried at first, especially as the 944 easily in the lower class of machine out that day. I need not to have worried though, the other drivers were all very good and the 944 held its own round the bends. It was then just the long drive home and back to work and normal life to look forward too.

The 944 covered 1800 miles in five days of autoroute, autobahn, twisty mountains, the nurburgring and a proper good thrashing round spa. It performed faultlessly and the vast amount of tools I took never left the tool bag. The more I use the car, the more I grow to love it. Its never going to win a traffic light Grand Prixs, but at Spa the section from Les Combes down to Stavelot is fantastic and I was easily catching up a lot fast cars round Pouchon which made me smile every time.
All in all a good few days away with some great people. It was a really well organised tour and some nice hotels and meals had been booked for us enroute.

It's the second trip I have done with The Nurburgring Experience and I will certainly consider more.

Do you still have the rear seat squab fitted? I removed everything from my first series one car years ago and it droned and resonated terribly.

When I came lighten another series one I removed the sound deadening and replaced the carpets in the cabin and retained the rear squab. Even with plastic windows fitted all around it wasn't unbearable and by 90mph-100mph it was almost silent!

I relented over the 'radio' too. A pair of rear speakers and a little bit of wire weigh far less than the stuff that I regularly placed on the back seat, so I fitted them along with a small simple amplifier which allowed me to use an iPod. Worth the weight penalty 10x over, as the little bit of carpet and the rear seat squab were.

It's all gone, just metal. I almost put some speakers in for the trip, but decided against it.

It's not too bad, if anything the road noise is the worst rather than the exhaust.

Ride quality on the kw's is quite good as well.


 
Thanks for the post, looks like it was an awesome trip. I'd love to do something similar one day myself. Do you have a Turbo or S2?
