944S Idle Valve Location?

Hi,

I have read that the 944S idle valve is prone to gunking up causing rough idle problems which is my current problem, can anyone please tell me it's location and how to get to it and is it a long job?

It's under the intake manifold. If you have small hands, it "can" be gotten to without removing the manifold.

Assuming it's the same as the S2 then it can be removed on its own (even by big-handed clumsy oafs like me). You need to remove a pipe to get it clear then it's not too difficult*







* not too difficult = 150 times easier than any job on a 306.
 
It is bolted to the underside of the inlet manifold. I am not sure about doing it with the manifold on. The pipes are clamped to the ICV with clips not worm drive clips which means they need to be lever off before the pipes can be slid off.

To remove the manifold isn't that difficult but it will mean removing the fuel rail and injectors, and the accelerator cable, dip stick and a LOAD of vacuum pipes. Not a difficult job at all but reassembley needs some concentration as it is all to easy to clamp vacuum hoses etc under the manifold and in the wrong place. It does help to mark which pipe goes where.

The manifold can be lifted out complete with the throttle body. At times it doesn't seem like it. It does take some wiggling tho.

Don't be tempted to stick a screw driver in the valve once you have it out. Some one tried that for what ever reason on mine and it had damaged the aluminium slider. This item costs up to £140 from an indipendent specialist, and makes a huge difference to the way the car runs at idle and at speed.

If you are going to remove the manifold, I would suggest replacing the vacuum hoses at the same time, as many of these run under the manifold to the front of the engine.

How the heck did you do that? I've often looked at mine and there's no way I could get my artistic piano playing hands in there [&:]
 
I must admit that my titchy paws wouldn't make it either. My hands are the same size as my ex-wifes, (the joys of being the runt of the litter) and unless there is some other angle ie from below to get at it I think it might be easier to do an irish jig with one foot nailed to the floor.

I don't remember exactly but I know I did it. Maybe it's easier if you can put the roof down or something [8D]
 
There is a turbo valve on ebay...... [;)]

How could they possibly be so stupid as to bolt it to the manifold on an 'S'? On my turbo, the bracket is bolted to the block, nice and easy to get to with a long 5 (Or 6?)mm allen driver.
