944S on a 1988 petrol tank leak

With Rutland looming, I don't know if this is a common problem on 944 verses their age now so sorry if it has been spoken about previously.

So, after smelling occasional smell of petrol from the outside the car, after looking beneath there's sweat marks from the very bottom of the petrol tank but can't see exactly where this leak is because of the bottom protection stone guard fitted. Having 3/4 full tank it will require draining before it can be dropped and inspected, so I'm reluctant to drop the support band to remove the exterior stone guard!

I don't know if it could be from the petrol take off as the fuel line appears leave between the guard to fuel filter, or just the tin worm causing it. The Tank looks pretty good as over the years I've replaced several and this one looks bright and solid still

Difficult to diagnose without seeing pics/ the real thing.

I would suggest the leak is not actually from the tank, but from the pipes from the tank to the pump or pump to filter.

The other leak could be from the filter screwed into the tank - it has a large rubber seal.

Cheers Chris,

I've done a bit of fishing and know the tank plastic, I'm about to have a go to see if I can get the stone guards off to work out
where the leak is, I assume you have to support the tank with a large piece of ply when you remove the support band?

Thanks Clark's garage, so the support band is for holding on the stone guards.....leak chasing here we go !!!

Right who would have thought its not tank or the bottom draw off bung seal, top of tank is fine, fuel lines or connection unions too. Its the pump itself peeping from the terminal posts. I have tried tightening the terminal connection too still no luck,,, so a new one!

Hi Sorry didnt get online quickly enough to reply regarding the stone guard/ supporting bracket - the arm/bracket held in by a 13mm bolt takes the weight of the stone guards and the fuel pump.

Hi Chris,

Not a problem as Clarks garage came in handy,,, first quick look beneath the car I thought the strap was part of the tank support. With a bit of knowledge getting to the pump was nice and easy. I have ordered one up from Frazerpart so should be in time to fit for the run up to Rutland on Sunday,,,fingers crossed.

First time I come across a pump housing failing causing a leak!

Hi Elliot,

Thanks for the offer, Ive ordered for nextday delivery so hopefully in time for Rutland this Sunday.
