However could also be the torque tube or the gearbox itself and the sound is resonating. The boxes can be quite noisy, even from factory, at idle. An oil change for the box is well worth doing and maybe use some swepco if it turns out to be the box.
Instead of dipping the clutch, pull the gear lever hard right and see if the noise goes away. Try once or twice and see if it makes a difference! If so it is the 5th gear idler and not really a concern. 5th gear was an afterthought in the evolution of the 944 gearbox.

It will be noisy for ages then eventually seize. Probably take a very long time to seize though. I wouldn't overly worry.
Also remember the noise from the gearbox and torque tube can travel up and sound like it's coming from the engine bay!

In my experience (recent) my noisy release bearing started to "hang up" on the guide tube and interfere with shifting. It was behaving as if the clutch was not releasing fully. It was intermittent - worse when cold - but I had to change it out before (more?) damage to the transmission occurred.
Once apart the clutch disc and pressure plate looked near new (wear measure was 20mm vs a range of 18mm new to 34mm wear limit) but the release bearing/guide was full of very hard, very black grease. The bearing "felt" OK to the hand. So it was the build up of hardened grease that was causing the problem. So if you are in there - change the bearing and tube - the previous owner's failure to do so left me changing out a good clutch (because the labor is so high- I can't afford to keep going in there changing one part at a time).
Also note that SACHS has only one clutch kit listed in the current catalog for 944 NA (didn't see one for the Turbo) and the disc is slightly different in that it has combined springs - three large springs with small springs internal to the large ones rather than 3 large springs and 3 small springs individually spaced around the hub. In recent spirited driving of my S2, I found the clutch to be slipping a little before engaging fully (with a thump) - e.g. full engagement came 1/2 second after the clutch pedal was fully released. So it may be better to look for an "old stock" clutch kit under the old part numbers.
