944's What To Seriously Look Out For !

Hi all im new to this forum and am looking to buy a 944 (non turbo) model

Theres a few in the Autotrader at the mo for £2.5 - 4.5k mark

what i wanna know is what do i seriously look out for ? what are the achilles heels of the 944 ? whet not to touch & whats ok etc...

id appreciate anything youve got to say as 944 owners yourselves id value youre experience with these cars..

I'v had a bill for my car of nearly £2.5k!!!

Be realistic about the condition of a sub £5k car. These car can be very strong and are very well made but keep in mind that they can be expensive to run, just as well otherwise every chav would have one!!
 
£2.5k Whats that for thou ? gotta be one big full main dealer service & a new set of AP brakes !

No that would be an annual service at the main dealer!!!!!

Point is that things can and prob will get expensive. If you pay £3k-£4k for a car, just make sure you can throw some money at it at some point in its life.

The old addage buy the best one you can afford, is very much the case for these cars. Buy one form an enthusisat who has loved it, not a chav who has delusions of grandure.

At that kind of money i would be tempted buy a nice late model 924S.
 
Look at the fuel lines.

These seem to be starting to rust on the cars now (I think I had one of the first with the problem...)[:mad:]
To replace with the proper Porsche ones needs the gearbox to be dropped. VERY expensive...
Throw in a couple of front wishbones and a service, and I easily reached the £2.5K...[:eek:]
 
I wouldnt expect to buy a 15/20 y/o car without throwing money at it at some point

as it is me bike (zx7) costs £250 a pair of tyres every 3000 miles not inculding the rest of servicing using fully synthetic oils etc genuine brake pads wheel bearings chains discs Knee sliders toe sliders etc the list goes on and thats without track days wheelies that ruin suspension & general pissing about.

I wouldnt be taking it to a porsche main dealer for servicing ..... for the price of two services you could buy one !

all i want to know is like most cars have problems ie Vauxhall & the eco-tec engines with valve problems & or head gaskets

what problems are the achilles heel of the 944 ? ive read about the 16v ones needing cam chain tensioners etc just looking for some sound advice when looking at some ?
 
I think the point is on a 15-20 year old car EVRYTHING could be an achilles heel.

As with most cars, i think if the bodywork is in good nick then the rest of the car should be a goer. I havent heard of anyone shooting arrows at a 944 but i am sure one is bound to prove fatal. [;)]
 
Have a good read of the buyers guide at www.clarks-garage.com and then read the 944 FAQ which is also listed at Clarks. There's another good guide on www.pistonheads.com

The 2.5 944 has no particular achilles heal if it has been maintained properly. You need to see evidence that it has been looked after properly in recent years. These cars are cheap to buy but if things do start wearing out and the owner cannot afford a proper fix then you run the risk of buying a bodged car. At the end of the day these cars use Porsche parts, they will go on for years but do cost a bit more when they eventually wear out.

Things to look for:

1. No rust - Full galvanising should prevent rust appearing unless there has been a bodged repair
2. Cam belt and balance belt replaced at least every 4 years
3. Oil changes every 6000 miles, service every 12000
4. Gearbox oil at least every 4 years (some cars have a whiney gearbox)
5. A fussy owner, not someone who bought it a year ago because its cheap but now can't afford it

Afternoon

The thing I was most warned about when looking at buying the S2 was the belts - timing and balance - and the cam chain tensioner. Everyone said make sure they'd been done or budget to get them done.

I've only had mine since December but I'm over the moon with it. Much better than driving around in some anonymous Eurobox and I've done 14,000 miles since getting it.

I'm sure the lads will add loads of info when they get online later [:)]

Yep as said before buy the best you can for your money. It is a fantastic car that I wished I had purchased years ago instead of buying run of the mill cars but when I decided to take the plunge I went and viewed about 10 cars before settling as much on the place I bought it from ( Hartech ) as the car itself , and yes £9500 was a lot for a 92 S2 with 110k on the clock but it was in superb condition and 10 months later so far barring tyres has been minimal to expense.

Yep I know it will cost me money in the future but it will be worth every penny [;)]
