Tip is wonderful - I'm in my 18th year of 968 tip ownership and would not consider a manual - but then I'm retired and lazy! I drive the tip as a clutchless manual and very seldom use full auto (good in motorway traffic jams!). I love the way you still use the gearstick rather than buttons or paddles, tap forward to change up and back to change down is intuitive, and the intelligent way the tip ECU will not let you over-rev - hit the rev limiter without touching the stick and it changes up for you! Also it will not let you come to a stop in too high a gear to pull away safely (as a BMW Steptronic did to me years ago). Drop the revs to 1200-1000 without touching the stick and it will change down from 4-3-2 by the time you stop - and pulling away in 2 is fine, you can manually select 1 or floor it for the kickdown if you like! In Northern Spain last year, we found some twisty mountain roads which would have quickly worn my left leg out with a manual car, but were a doddle in my tip! Also the full auto is clever, it has about 5 different modes and adjusts to your driving style (so I believe, never really tried it as I always drive in manual mode).
I think the auto box in a 944S2 is different to the tip box in a 968, as the 698 tip box is from the 964, and photos I've seen of 944 auto gearsticks look like a normal auto rather than a 968 tip.
The tip gearbox really suits the 968 cab, as it's more a car for gentle country road runs roof down than for high spirited driving - although it goes well enough when desired!! Mine gets mostly sunny day use only, spends the winter tucked up in her garage.
