944S2 Door locking

Ummm, how do you mean "It will lock if you disconnect the battery"? You must mean manually (as in, you put the key in and turn it to manually make the lock mechanism move)?
Has it ever worked; has it just stopped working recently?
I'd be suspecting the wiring to the door solenoid (has someone mixed the two wires up?) or has the solenoid itself failed? They are very cheap to replace, so it is unlikely to be a pricey fix.

1 it's never worked since I bought it.
2 if you push down the button on the door it locks but wont re open on the remote or with door handles or key.
(the button looks damaged ,it can be pulled right out,as if someone lost their temper trying to lock/unlock it)
3 Disconnect the battery and it will unlock with the key inserted manually
your solenoid idea sounds good,does the unattached button give us any more clues?
sounds like the mechanism is all in there if it unlocks manually.
