Having only had my 944 S2 cabrio a couple of months clocking 1,000 miles I was out today and just pulled onto a roundabout when i lost drive to rear wheels having just enough momentum to park on the path (nice wide one). Having had a look underneath there is no obvious signs of drive shaft failure or dis-engaugement at either end of shafts?
My gut feeling is that I've lost output to one side? Engine & gear selection appear fine - my son had similar issue recently with his Renault Megane which proved to be a drive shaft had popped out of the gear box causing loss of drive! A read through the Haynes manual indicates this is unlikely as the shafts are flange bolted at both ends?
Anyone had similar experiance and can advise on likely problem?

Just back from holiday and found this buried in opne of the rarely-looked-at technical forums. I've moved it here in case it hasn't been answered. [:)]

Good find Paul [:)]

I've swapped a few emails with Tony and when he said he'd already posted a query on here I wondered why I hadn't seen it? [&:]

Made any progress today Tony?

Tony,

I had the same problem with my S2. Suddenly no drive as I attempted to pull away. The gears selected as normal, the clutch felt the same and there were no strange noises. Underneath all appeared normal until I put it in gear with the engine running. Then I could see the drivers side driveshaft was turning but the wheel obviously wasn't. The drive shaft bolts had all come loose. The rubber boot prevents the bolts beng lost and the hub flange prevents the drive shaft from dropping. Once I'd done up all the bolts again all was normal. I just had to replace 1 bolt which sheared as it finally took all the load after all the others had come loose.

I believe these bolts coming loose is not unheard of, so I would look there first.

Problem is not just an S2 issue I had it on my '83 one - my fault I only did the 3 bolts I could get at, intending to do the others when I rotated the shaft later......
But I have heard of another one that hadnt had any recent work.
Mike

Tony did say the clutch had been replaced fairly recently. Maybe the driveshaft cheesehead bolts were reused or not done up properly and they have backed out on one side [:(]
