Hi All

Four years coming up since my belts & rollers where done, anyone had them done of late & know where the cheapest place to buy the kit from ?

Thanks in advance

From a very brief check I would say these places look the cheapest in ascending order (from personal experience and briefly taken a look online now) starting off with the cheapest:

1) GSF (An assumption that they supply the right parts (I'll say more later on) (they always seem to be a little cheaper than ECP for me))
2) ECP (they only list 3 tensioners on their website out of the 4). They also look to potentially be below the £170 if you were to source the tensioner elsewhere - I personally would avoid this kit)
3)Design 911 - Including VAT they want just over £180 for a full 'belt kit with tensioners et. al.
4)Porscheshop - Under £200 for the lot
5)FrazerPart - Just under £200
6)Berlyn - Over £210 for the lot.

Caveats? From what I have been told by a specialist and what I have seen on a very popular American forum I personally would avoid the ContiTech kits, despite their being dubbed as 'OE'. Some peeps (and the garage in question) found that they could stretch in service and potentially slip (there is evidence of this on an American forum. Another specialist local to me stopped selling the cam belt in ContiTech and favoured Dayco over it ; He felt part of the problem was down to the rounded teeth that the belt in question used, something Dayco and Gates do not use (both have more angular teeth like most belts sold for other cars). He was happy to use the ContiTech balance belt however. Dayco also seem to make belts for many more main manufacturers (Peugeot and Ford being two of them).

With that in mind, many people have used them with no ill effects present.

From GSF it took me a few goes to get the right parts from them (they do not sell the 944 cambelt kit as a kit. It is down you to figure out what you need). Whilst you will get INA or Ruville tensioners as well as either a Dayco or Gates belt they got confused with one of the idlers I required (the S2 uses 5 tensioners over the Turbo's 4) as a result of poor information on their screen (and me mentioning that an S2 required 5 tensioners, not 4 like the 8Vs). The first time around they sold me a smaller idler (from an earlier 944) but they eventually got it right after a couple of trips there (from home and back). Whilst this situation may not have happened with a Turbo (the tensioners on them are common to all of the 944 engines after 1986) it is worth doing your homework in ensuring the tensioners are correct from them. This may make you potentially go to one of the specialists (purely from a hassle point of view and having the correct bits to hand when you come to do the job).

ECP like GSF also do not sell the 944 kit as a kit ; you will have to pick the bits individually. I am with Ian's post (lower down) on this one if the car is to be in regular use.

I take it you shall be changing the belts yourself?

From 20 years of working on classic cars and bikes I have come to this conclusion ...

If the parts are available OE from the main dealer, buy them there.

I have learned this through lots of parts not fitting, lots of parts being returned, lots of parts ending up more expensive in the long run.

OPC all the way mate.

Got my B & R Kit from Promax

From experience of OPC, Promax, Euro CarParts, I have concluded that Promax have provided the best overall Service to me.

Definition of Service is :

Product Knowledge
Relevant advice
Cost
Speed of Service
Error Rate

OPC enquiry typically, What model? 944 turbo, Chassis number? XXXXXXX. What Year? 1989. Is it Manual or Tiptronic? I get nervous after that.
A good parts supplier will suggest perhaps, the Widget bolts can get worn, we usually replace them, they cost 17p, would you like them included?
I've never met them but Promax are always professional, offer good advice, know what they are talking about, charge sensibly, deliver quickly, and they don't make careless mistakes.
I have their number in my mobile, and one day a local 4 wheel aligner got confused with the rear camber eccentrics, I called Promax and they immediately faxed a diagram and comments to the guy! [:)] I was highly impressed

I'd go Promax too. You'll get exactly the right parts for your specific model and at the moment their website list belts and rollers for 89 Turbo at £179.95 inc VAT

Unfortunately, if you click on 'details' all the belt/roller kits are showing as out of stock, but worth a call to check. I'll be needing
the complete set for my S.2 shortly.

Didn't see anybody quote a current OPC price out of interest?

OPC price for all the bits including pump £1000

OPC price for all the bits including pump £1000

Is a large part of that the pump?

I seem to remember this is one of the parts where you can but perfectly good ones for a fraction of the price, as it's not a Porsche part to begin with.

Speak to Newcastle or Kendal OPC (Andrew) and ask what price they will do the full kit for. Don't forget your Club discount.

If it's too much to Promax [;)]

Remember you would receive a good discount from OPC. My last 944 had all front seals, both belts and ancillary belts + a water pump fitted for around £1200. Carried out by Porsche Byfleet around 5 years ago.

I think on another forum this is what a very well known (and one of the more talkative specialists on the forum) quoted for the same work on a 944.
