I came across this Australian 944 website recently, which seems to suggest that we' re not driving 944' s / 951' s after all, but actually 945' s / 952' s

You learn something new every day...

Incidentally, it' s quite a nice site with summaries of all the watercooled Porsches, special editions, etc. Worth a look, if only for the 924 Carrera GT estate!
