95 GTS First Impressions

GAFTON

New member
The Black Shark arrived on Friday and the initial impressions are good: the beautiful shape, the mighty roaring engine, traffic disappearing in the rearview mirror = [:D] On the other side: steering extremely heavy (going back to the VW Passat it felt I was driving a toy! True?!), gas pedal equally heavy, road/tyre noise high, a bit too much feedback from the road, it wonders when hitting potholes and above a certain speed +10 the shakes on the front... Slightly annoyed that a speaker cover (front door, the large one) just fell off (what does one do: glue, replace part or ?) as did the plastic seat release (the one that alows the seat to be pushed forward to allow rear-seat passengers (?!!!) in) (what's the fix for that?). Finally, on two hot days, the a/c blower is laughable (very noisy but not much air being pushed through). Conclusion: some improvements needed and, hopefully possible, but I'm hooked and I'm smiling [:)]. Any thoughts, comments, suggestions are not only welcome but much appreciated...

Hi Gene :)

Glad to see you finally got it :)

Steering should not feel that heavy, check the front pressures...should be around 36 psi..rears are 44 psi.
Shouldnt shake either,,but may be pressures ...

Aircon sounds like it needs regassing...not uncommon.

I thought the seat releases just pushed on.

Speaker , never had it happen but superglue ??

Any more problems just ask :)

All the best Brett :)

Hi Brett,
and thanks for the info. Will check the tyres; spoke to the dealer: start by having them balanced, he said. A/c has just been taken apart and... (it's not the temperature (though I have yet to come across a European car that will produce the freezer effects generally available on US cars) but the strength of the air: just had this on my Passat: needed a new fan at £500) gassed, one hopes... Anyway I'm enjoying the car, though, of course, have yet to go to Germany to really try it out...

Brett,

Just looking at the owners manual which makes reference to the kickdown switch. I knew you had one installed, and it must have been an option, but presumably not a standard?

Hi Gene :)

You already have a kickdown switch under the throttle pedal...but you have to STAMP down on the pedal to activate it, then it will kick down a gear..

Most of us have an EXTRA switch wired in parallel to it and mounted on the dash or under the wheel in my case :) this works INSTANTLY...at slightest throttle pressure :):):).....GREAT FUN :):)

All the best Brett :)

Gene - RE: The force of your a/c (or not, so to speak!), you ought to check the pollen filter... I can't speak for 928s but on a BMW 325i I once owned I had the same problem and it turned out to be a blocked/clogged pollen filter - When I changed it the difference was incredible. Thanks, Llew

Thanks Llew,
I have no idea what kind of filters the 928 has but will investigate; my Passat has been serviced from new(now at +93000 miles) by the same dealer, every service by the book, no expense spared and what do I find at the last service? Although the cambelt should have been changed long ago, it had yet to be done, and as for the a/c/pollen filter it was quite black!!! so your suggestion is probably dead on.
