951 Auxilary water pump

Just had the Belts & water pump on my 1988 Turbo replaced by my local independent, Ouch !!
Drove the car next day & found that the auxiliary water pump, supplies water to the turbo, was leaking quite badly
so much that I am reluctant to drive the car.
This was not leaking prior to the work being carried out but I am assuming that the act of replacing the coolant coupled with a high concentration of
antifreeze has 'found' a leak path.
In any event the pump is not working, I have tested the electrical circuit with a multi meter & current is there when it is supposed to be so presume that
the pump has seized, not sure that it has ever worked in the fourteen years that I have owned the car !!
My understanding is that this part is only available as an OEM pattern part & suitably expensive at circa £200.00
Trawling the internet, Rennlist Forums, I have seen reference to a Mercedes part being easily converted, I presume that being electrical connections,
but no part no specified.
Has anyone had experience of this & found an alternative pump ? (I am reluctant to pay 'Porsche' prices for what after all is a pattern part
if there is a suitable alternative item on the market from another manufacturer).

Id hoped that knowing that a MB part could be used would help, but it appears that you already know as much as I do. You might be able to find out by asking on PP or RL, but sooner you than me...

This is off topic, but: I should have thought before I joined any 944 groups Terry, that theyd be full of dumb loudmouthed Americans... Im going to leave him to it.

Ben: if you manage to find out which Mercedes water pump it is, will you update this thread, please?

Simon where's the like button. It's get a bit much plenty off key board warriors with little care for what they say. But it does make posting pics and video simples..... However there's no real info or knowage. broad foot where getting active. 90 turbo S as well

Not often we hear off pump failure, maybe 2nd unit?

This is the bummer with doing work on the coolant system, you do it for piece of mind and it just creates another problem, doh!

I guess first point is get the motor out and see how it looks......

I hate directing people elsewhere as well (as this is where its at!) but maybe try posting on some other forums and see if anyone knows the MB part no.

On a basic level could be a few things such as an air pocket etc etc, just be careful the turbo engines are notorious for overheating due to trapped air in the coolant chamber closest to the fire wall / back of engine.

It is possible and I have with good results, to strip, re-seal and unsieze a leaky dead turbo pump.

This may sound weird but . . .

After giving the coolant system a once over on mine and resealing the auxiliary pump I found it was no longer working when installed but had worked fine a moment earlier.

I loosened the retaining clamp on the pump slightly and it works perfectly. Give it a go!

Situation so far. Pump removed & inspected, 'O' ring between two halves of pump perished & cracked. No suitable replacement in my 'O' Ring kits so re-assembled using Instant Gasket.
Pump motor bench tested & found to be not working. Pump re-installed in car in order to get it back on the road. No leakage from pump after re-filling with coolant & short test drive.
Will require to source a replacement pump in the long term.

Re. OEM replacement pump - manufactured by Valeo, part no FP05

Re. Mercedes Benz pump, apparently these were commonly used in the heating system on various models - 300D, 380SL, 450SL, 560SEL to name but a few.
Apparently the hose fittings are smaller than the Porsche but the Impeller housing from the Porsche Pump is directly interchangeable with the MB item, see the link below for
full information & instructions.

Mercedes Benz part No's - MBZ037173 & 0008356964.

Bosch Part No 0130002070

Note MB & Valeo part no's obtained from US websites but should presumably be OK for Europe ?
