Hi guys

An urgent question....Can anyone tell me if the units are all the same or were they different throughout the model's lifetime...is an N/A unit the same as a turbo?... is there anything different about the '86' turbo model year heating system?

Pete

Assuming that you do not have air conditioning, do you have temperatures on your dial, or just a re-blue hot-cold fade? Im wondering whether this is the difference, but I cant really remember, sorry.

Hi Simon...yes to A/C but it"s climate control....IIRC there are temp numbers...early cars had full climate control rather than just A/C

Btw...it's the large heater control box under the dash with the matrix inside that I'm trying to find out if theres a difference?

I can have a look in PET for part numbers Pete

what year is your car, and ac will use the same components if it’s plain ac or climate it will be the controller that’s different

so you need a heater matrix

Thank's Martyn.. yes the matrix needs replacing.. the year is early 86.. turbo of course..:)

Hi Pete

PET2 lists the same part from 1986 >> 1995, Heater Matrix (Heat Exchanger in PET) 944 572 130 00 for all 944 and 968,
£363.85 inc Vat from Porsche, and don't forget new O rings and Clips

Think its a complete dash strip on a 944 RHD, as I know you can get it done with no real dramas on a LHD car.

Hi Pete, Rich Harms recently removed his heater box and matrix to replace them with a much smaller and lighter unit on his (86?) race car.

He’ll be able to give you some tips (and maybe parts).

Hi Martyn

Thanks for that, it confirms what I had found during my searches yesterday but it's always good to hear it from someone else. My son had already got a price from Porsche but I didn't want him to spend his money which he does far too often. He did order the O rings and clips though, ready to strip the dash out. I found some used matrix's on eBay last night, in fact, there were a few including the whole heater housings and various parts attached. I have taken a punt on one of those, my housing may and probably is fine, but it will be good to have back up parts from the other housing ordered.
Not sure how my son will find the time or space to work on my car but he seems confident in getting it sorted. He may fit the leather dash covering which was bought 6+ years ago and fix the clock ( I bought a small digital unit with modern extra's which is the same size),cover the centre console in leather, new gear garter, etc etc.... there's a lot that I want to get sorted. Not to mention the full respray which he keeps going on about, that won't happen for a while yet.

Anyway, seems the car is going to get some much needed TLC in the coming months, that will be nice...:)

Thanks for your help sir

Pete

Thanks' David, as you can see by my reply to Martyn which has crossed your post I have now purchased a used unit to see if it's good enough, we shall see...

Kind regards

Pete

Ok, if you've sorted one now........
I've got one you could of had for £25 ! From my 1987 924
I replaced it with a lighter unit....

That looks a very similar setup to Rich’s racecar, he’s in the process of fitting a Tilton (lol, that autocorrected twice to ”Stilton” you can see where my brain’s been the last week or so) pedal box with integrated cylinders too.

Yes,

This little unit is a good weight saving and only required for demisting the screen (We have more than enough driver heat from the Engine bay & Tunnel heat soak!)

I'm also removing the Servo and fitting a Tilton pedal assembly with under floor Masters...
Like all pieces of kit, they are so expensive! Thank god I know the directors @ Competition supplies and can also claim the VAT back!
