Went to the track today. Overcast, had been raining, track slippery as you can clearly see, but had some fun anyway. They gave us the option of lining up on the grid in pairs and dragging off down the straight to do 4 hot laps. The guy I'm against was there for the 1st time today and a pretty heavy car so he went well. The 4wd was helping him a lot. I had to back off a few times for fear of giving him a love tap. Had no turn in, slipping rears, and my pedal was soft very soon after starting the 1st session...but apart from that the car went great. lol

Tried some E85 (approx 25%) and we fattened up the afrs up top. Was running 1.3 - 1.4 bar. Having more power today wouldn't have been any help anyway.

The engine is totally stock 2.5L with the Vitesse stage 5 kit which was meant for my 3L. With the S2 cwp, it creates enough of a shortened final drive to be able to get away with the too big turbo, especially on the track.

Oh, sorry about the flappy thing getting in the way. It's off the handle of the camera. I can't believe how bad the resolution is once downloaded onto Youtube too??

Fantastic. That 996TT was on the ragged edge. This is what i've come to appreciate about these things, for £5k + a few more for some mods you can have a car that will give a £50k+ proper supercar a run for its money. Realise it's 90% about the driver and it's difficult to assess the relative skills and capabilities of the drivers.

Nice footage Patrick, I love to see closeups behind another car (though it would make me very nervous if I didn't know the other driver very well). You can easily see just how much his car was moving side to side and stepping out of line then getting back on the straight and narrow again. I'd like to see similar footage from just behind your own car, shame he didn't have a camera when you went past.

I can't ever imagine Steve Kevlin letting us start side by side on a track day [] - waaaaaaaay too confrontational for our club [;)]

Tell us more about the E85, I thought you had to have seperate maps to use it alongside normal fuel? I have a station that sells it 15 miles from me, but I'd worry it would eat into the rubber parts of my fuel system (I admit I know very little about it)

I agree with Scott - I wouldn't fancy being too close behind someone who takes some "unorthodox" lines [:D]

He should be faster than you in the wet (and would be with the right driver) - The 944 is a bit of a handful (for me anyway) when it's wet & I expect yours would be interesting with the big turbo suddenly dropping in with a whole load of torque.

Impressive stuff - first lap or so it looked like the 996 was pulling away slightly, then they looked twitchy after that and your confidence looked good. Just need a rear cam next time [;)][FONT=Arial"][FONT=verdana, geneva"]

Thanks guys. Actually as much as he was on the ragged edge at times and it was obvious that I was able to take better lines, I was not doing it easily either. I knew the track much better than him and this guy arrived with a bit of a reputation of being young and reckless, however I was amazed at even though it seemed he was going to come off a number of times, the 4wd just kept him going in a forward direction. If I had got all wobbly like him in places, I would have been off for sure. The track was actually pretty slippery and my setup was far from ideal, however the KWs certainly earned their pricetag yesterday. [:D] Shame also that he actually had a camera mounted in his car, but it didn't work that time!
That starting format was a one off. The clerk of the course on the day knew both clubs competing (BMW and Porsche) and deemed us responsible enough to try this starting procedure. It worked without a hitch. As it was a timed event, many Porsches competed against one another.
Most people I spoke to didn't get near their best times so I was happy to just improve on mine slightly. The thing that concerns me is when the 3L motor goes back into this car, just how will the brakes keep up. Ahh well, more fun for next year. []
Oh Paul. Yes you are correct in that I am planning to run 2 maps, but that is with the standalone. Currently on this interim setup of the VR software I've decided to just have a play with the Bio-Fuel. There are a lot of rumors about E85 and most of them are wrong. It has very little negative effects on the car. Sure it's possible that it will degrade rubber components more rapidly, but nowhere near what is being touted in certain circles. If you go on Rennlist and search 'blown 944's threads, he has been using it in his daily driver for 2 years. He has also put 37psi through his motor!! Did wind up blowing his head gasket then, but drives on 28psi everyday. I plan to use E85 as an alternative to race rather than my everyday fuel. You do need to burn more of it (but it's cheaper as well), you should use big inj, and fatten up your afrs, especially higher up in the rev range. Apart from that it's pretty straightforward. So long as your motor is built well enough to handle higher boost, you can run it with E85 as it has much higher oxygen content. Talk to Jon about it. I know petrol in the UK is priced through the roof too. How much is the E85 there? It should definitely be noticeably cheaper.

Pat - you know you're just trying to justify a set of GT3 mk2 brakes!

You know me too well Scott. [:D] I think I lose a lot of time during braking and I have a pretty damn good setup as it is. Really, they are the next step. They're rather large and lovely though aren't they though????

Well I think either Pat or Ed is 'The Stig'.

From what I experienced as a passenger with Ed at Donnington, I would have to agree..[:D]

Nick / Scott - you'd make a few of my friends laugh for days if they heard that..... [:D] I try my best, but will always be a moderate track driver, albeit one with a few days under his belt. I'm sure you'll soon be catching me up [:D]

Really enjoyed that..... That chap in the 996 was ropey enough....! He nearly caught the cat litter as well ...[:D]

I reckon his tyres were or went off or were the wrong pressure. When he started he had good racing lines and drove as if he knew the circuit and started to pull away with solidly planted rear tyres and early exit acceleration so I cant see why after a few laps he suddenly got twitchy (and the car definitely became twitchy at similar speeds ie: he wasnt any faster) and was then caught up. The alternative is that the pasm/chrono/sporty/electronics gizmos were being confused (a la scooby/evo`s in damp conditions)

Not decrying any particular driver but watch it again and you`ll see what I mean.......................on the other hand I stand to be corrected mercilessly [&o]

Actually his rear shocks are stuffed according to him. If you read the posts on the actual Youtube clip he says that he was basically fighting the car on right hand turns. His tyres are Pirelli Corsa and they seemed fine and sticky to the touch, but perhaps the pressures were out? He definitely had more hp/tq than me but I had better lines and was able to capitalise at the end. To be fair, this guy had not been to this track before but it wasn't all plain sailing for me either. I had zero turn in on the tighter corners, rear slip, and a soft brake pedal...well at least they're my excuses and I'm sticking to them.[:)]
Next season I will try and race him again. He will have his car more sorted (I'm advising him to get KWs) and I'll have a lot more hp/tq to compete with, so we'll see what happens...[;)]
