It must have been an early prototype then! - They were sold from 86 I believe.
Are you sure the gearbox is seized? My experience of the cars is that the box is extremely robust and not likely to fail. Should you mean the transmission generally i.e. the electronics which control the % of drive going to the front and back axles? That system does fail on cars which are not used. Even so, if the electronics fail the car defaults to a manual setting and will still work.
Happy to point you in the right direction/provide more help but I think we need a bit more clarity as to the issue. PM me if necessary.

Are you buying or just interested?
What it's worth depends on what it is and it's condition/woes. Is it a Komfort or a Sport? Is it a 87/88 or a 91?
A sound Komfort starts at £350k going up to circa £500k and a Sport is worth considerably more. 91s, in my opinion, are worth no more than a similar 87/88 Komfort.
If the car you've mentioned has problems from lack of use (the biggest issue for 959s) then it could easily cost £50k to get it back on the road and £100k if the issues are more serious.
If you are buying PM me.

why are they so expensive?
I suggest if you know anything about them at all, you should know the answer to this[
