Am considering moving up from a 964 C2 to a 964/965 3.3 Turbo ( which is correct type number ??) obviously a 3.6 Turbo would be nice but well beyond my funds, so I was wondering if anyone could offer any opinion on this model 3.3 Turbo.
Would be nice to get an idea of what to look out for , the good and bad bits ,major expenses, what they arelike to drive etc .

Any response would be much appreciated,

Many thanks,

Steve

Thanks Andrew,i'll look forward to his comments, I was saddened to read of the loss of your lovely Turbo ,I'm only pleased by the fact that at least you were using and enjoying the car,and escaped serious injury,

Regards

Steve

Thanks Steve,

Kidneys are on the mend and damaged ribs are likewise. A little time and water under the bridge helps...oh and the money's on the way so biggest headache is what to get next; had some great responses with much to consider.

Have PM'd Tim, so watch this space.....

The 3.3 is a great car and £25k should buy you a nice one with good PPI and maybe a few good mods
thrown in. For the same money i would also try a 930 or 996 turbo just in case ! Gotta try the boost bong vs the tidal wave !
964 is the right number.

Got your PM Andy - glad to hear you are making a recovery and have your eyes on the future - make sure you let us know what you decide to buy...

Hi Steve,

I am no expert just someone who has spent a lot of time and money on my 1992 964 turbo. Since I bought it in April 2006 I have spent the best part of £18k on it, including tax and insurance but not petrol! However this has been offset as it is now worth at least 30% more than I paid for it due to the strong Euro (it is LHD) and the increasing realisation that this is one of the classic Porsches!

Some of the most common problems, and the ones from which my car has suffered (in order of cost)

- Broken headstuds (are very common even on lower mileage cars) leading to top end rebuild - c.£6k
- Rusty & leaking heat exchangers/headers "" c.£2k to replace with aftermarket (B&B)
- Rusty & leaking oil pipes "" c.£3k to replace with OEM
- Turbochargers can also give up on higher mileage cars "" c.£1k to replace or £500 to rebuild
- Worn clutch & flywheel (often done at same time as top end rebuild) - c.£1.5k
- Wastegates tend to leak boost and rust to the exhaust system "" c.£500 to replace with aftermarket (Tial)

There are also the usual 964 problems including problematic heating and ventilation and lifting caliper plates.

To minimise these problems, my advice would be:

1. To drive as many cars as you can - they are getting older now and as a result, their condition and performance varies massively. Many will have had modifications - some minor, some more major and many will be for sale because of an impending big bill like one of those above!

2. To get someone who knows 964 turbos to give it a once over - Peter Morgan springs to mind.

3. Make sure you have someone who knows 964 turbos to look after it for you. There are plenty of Porsche specialists who don't understand these cars and will charge you to "learn" them - the 964 turbo is a cross between a 930 and a 964 and is subtly different to both. There are several good specialists who know thee cars down here in the South. Budget at least £2k per year, more if you get the modding bug!

4. Don't limit your budget too much when buying the car "" paying more upfront may well reduce your longer-term bills. This is the trap I fell into"¦

A few of us meet up regularly around the South East "" you'd be welcome to join us.

Anything else "" feel free to PM me.

Good luck!

Cheers,

Tim.

Thanks for that Tim,

Sorry for the delay in responding, I just never got around to it .Your post certainly makes interesting reading although I'm not sure my bank would agree!!

Like I said I am considering it and have been browsing around to see what is for sale.It very much depends how much I can get for my 964 C2 and my job security. It seems stable enough a the moment but who knows.
I might just keep looking and find out more about the cars and sit tight for a while and keep saving while i see how my job future looks.

Have you considered modifying your 964 ? That could be a lower cost way to much better
car, but you wouldnt have the turbo looks.

Hello Jonny boy, that is a route I had been thinking of, not really sure what mods are really worth doing though??

Steve

964's have been supercharged, only -ve is the extra weight in the rear of the car and of course the cost.

A turbo or turbos is another option but it would be difficult to draw a line where to stop [:D] £££ New pistons, Motec etc etc.

3.8 conversions are widely done and 9m in warrington are doing
a 4 litre conversion with Motec etc i believe good reports on this
Add in big red brakes , new suspension and you will have a turbo beater !
A search on rennlist 964 forum will provide all the info you could want.
