964 aircon failure

Hi, my 1990 964 c2 has a failure in the aircon system.
the engineer said one of my aircon motors is seized but if I disconnect it and run with the single motor, it works but with a less-stronger wind.

however, the most that i concerned is the engine temperature. for those old mercedes with aircon fitted, if the aircon is dead, the secondary fan that blows the engine will not work. which cause the engine overheat easily.

I am afraid that those 964 with aircon would have the same problem.
can anyone answer?

It sounds as though your engineer is confused. There are no air con motors - bar the fan on the condenser in the front left wing. I suspect the two you are talking about are the blower fans to the left and right of the dash. Running with only one will cause no problems other than to the poor resident of that seat.

The only impact on engine cooling is with the rear blower (singular in the case of a C2) which assists the air flow both to the cabin and away from the engine although the main cooling fan, driven by a belt from the crankshaft, can adequately cope with engine heat in all but very extreme situations.

If the rear blower doesn't run the dash fans won't run anyway for more than a few seconds - either of them.

thank you thats a brilliant answer. however, let me tell you my case hopefully you can picture it at some point.

basically when i turned on the aircon, it did on for 1sec and then turned off and unable to switch back on again until i get the fuse replaced.
so i send it to him and got a reply saying that "motor is seized" and a new one cost around 399 quid.

if that causes no harm to the car, i will just leave it. [:D]

does it make sense to you still?

sorry i have no idea , its done by the mechanics.
he said when he disconnects the seized one , then the aircon works again. but with running with a less-strong wind coming out..
 
In that case, it's probably the fuse in the engine bay fuse box. As eluded to by Dave above, it sounds like the rear blower might be kaput and it keeps blowing the fuse. However I would first check that the right fuse is in there. The fuse was originally a 25 amp one which would blow regularly so Porsche advise that a 30 amp fuse should be used.

Even if the rear blower has truly seized there's no danger of running the aircon system. It just won't work as well.
 
Thanks for the replys but I've tried to fit a 30amp fuse but it still keep going off. i decided to run the aircon with the only single blower now :)
 
It is also worth checking the bi-metallic switch which clips into the side of the plastic air trunking before the fan-this can stick/burn/weld contacts together & blow even the bigger fuse.
