964 Alarm + Immobiliser

Guys,

Probably been asked before but trying to sort out insurance ... my 1990 964 Coupe has standard alarm/door locks and an immobiliser, that uses a small 'chip' that you plug into the steering column. I presume the immobilser was fitted by the dealer. The small plastic covered chip says "Porsche Immobiliser" - I need to know what model this is so the insurance company (or I) can check if it is Thatcham Cat 1 or 2 etc. Any help would be appriciated.

Thanks

Terry

I am sure its a catagory 2 system is that.
Quite a lot of people had to upgrade to Cat 1 alarms for insurance purposes. e,g Clifford , Toad etc.

Same problem, same system, no confirming paperwork, same hassle with the insurance company. [] Here's what I did.

I very politely made an appointment with the service manager at my OPC (where I am not a customer) drove the car there and asked if he would be so kind as to verify for me that my car had a genuine Porsche alarm. He stepped outside, turned the thing on and off to see it worked (took 10 seconds) and agreed he would confirm it in writing. I thanked him profusely and left. A few days later I got a very official looking letter on Porsche paper confirming that my car had a Thatcham Cat 2 alarm, part no P999.999.795.01 and that is was Porsche approved and tested as working. I sent this to my insurers (Direct Line) who accepted it as OK.

Job done. Cost £0. [;)]

Why not give it a try?

Exactly the same for me, although OPC said they normally charge £10 for the service.

Even at £10 it's a lot cheaper than upgrading the alarm.

... of course in my view all of these alarms are useless anyway, and it's just another conspiracy by the insurance industry []

Same for me,letter provided free by OPC.Whilst alarm fitted at factory, immobiliser was a Dealer retrofit provided by Porsche for the964.

For some reason this didn't work for me.

Had a letter in the history of the car when I bought it confirming that a Thatcham 1 alarm was fitted, sent this off to Norwich Union and it wasn't good enough for them.

Had to have a new alarm (Clifford) fitted to satisfy them.

Fortunately the difference in the cost between them and other insurers covered this.

This letter satisfied Allianz who provided the policy for Mannings when I renewed in March;and I saved £125+ moving from Performance Marque(Royal&Sun Alliance)
