964 amber front n/s indicator & reflector

Hi

I am looking for the amber front near side (passenger side on RHD car) indicator and reflector to go on a 1992 964. The part numbers are 964 631 405 00 and 964 631 409 00.

I see a lot of 964s with clear indicators so thought people must have the amber ones sitting around. If you have and want to sell them, please drop me a note. Must be in excellent condition.

Try Porscheapart and the usual breakers etc. I did have the indicators etc from my car until about a monthago, but unfortunately for you I managed to sell them at the Husborne Crawley autojumble ! Sorry, just too late !

Hi Jamie. Never mind, worth a try. Going to see those guys on Saturday re wheels so will let you know how I get on. They seem very clued up, more so than some of the other people I have spoken too.
 
Good luck with them - if you do use them make sure you get them to mask off the mating surfaces - they didn't on mine. When I challenged them on it they said that they never do and they've never had a problem with the powder coating melting etc. Sure enough it's melted, dried and is flaking off on my wheels (presumably due to excess track-day generated heat). Now not sure what to do as I don't want to end up with horrible wobbly wheels because some of the mating surfaces still have powder coating on them and some bare metal ............
Overall the wheels seem to be standing up well, but just watch those mating surfaces.

Jamie -same happened to me -fortunately, when the vibration set in it had melted all the paint off the 'mating surface', so just a case of rubbing it off to bare metal......
 
New addition is great, still keeping us entertained and luckily quite well natured (at the moment).

The guys said when they refurb race wheels, they don't paint the mating surface and it is no problem for road wheels. They usually just check the existing finish and replicate that. Good guys and some nice wheels there!!

You obviously got more sense out of them than I did ! Didn't seem to differentiate between road and race wheels with me. I suspect you managed to speak to the 'gaffer' and I got the 'tea boy' ! Anyway as Mel suggested I think I should be able to flake / scrape off the remainder of the powdercoating off the mating surfaces next time I take the wheels off. I had a go with a rotary wire brush which wasn't a good idea - it merely seemed to scratch the powdercoating and then the alloy underneath !!! I couldn't see how I could ensure I ended up with a flat surface. The guys who did the wheel refurb said they knew of nothing that could melt / remove the powder coating and that the only way to do it whould be to put the wheels onto a lathe and turn the powdercoating off - I decided this wasn't a very good idea. They seemed confident that the coating would stand up to track use - which I managed to disprove after one trackday ! Other than this issue I have been very happy with their work so far. I just need to find a way to remove some seriously caked-on brake dust left over from Spa without scratching the powdercoating underneath.
Are you confident they will do a proper job on the mags ? If so are they charging more than their standard ?

This is daft because the need to have clean mating surfaces on wheels became very apparent at least as long ago as 1985 with the 944. That car is very sensitive to the slightest out-of-balance/roundness/trueness in its wheels. It was very difficult indeed to get the wheels of an early 944 balanced such that there was no vibration in the steering wheel at 55-60mph. I found that tiny bits of dirt on the mating surfaces could make perfectly balanced wheels feel dreadfully rough. I wrote a letter to Porsche Post describing this effect. I found that the best solution was to use a soft wooden scraper to get rid of all gunge from the hubs and the wheels and then coat them with a very thin layer of copper grease before mounting the wheel. I once cured a vibrating steering wheel by removing a bit of black oily gunge that was about 2mm square from the mating surface of a 944 tele-dial wheel!

I don't think that my 911s have been as sensitive to wheel trueness as my 944s, so maybe this is not wisdom that is so well known here. To my mind, coating the mating surface of a wheel is just not a smart thing to do. No matter how good the coating is, it will never produce a surface that is as true and as flat as the machined mating surface of the wheel.

They actually showed me a set of mag wheelsthey had just done and they looked good. They are charging more than std as the mags are more time consuming and are treated to avoid corrosion in future. I am wondering whether powder coating or painting is the right solution, both followed by laquer.

What is the original finish, I assume it is painted and laquered?

Not sure what the stock finish is, but I would suspect you are correct ie paint and lacquer. As far as I know there is no need to lacquer on top of powdercoat - it is a hard shiny finish in itself. Powdercoating is supposedly harder and more durable, but some people have expressed concerns that the temperature required for the powdercoating process can be detrimental to the alloy composition of the wheels (there was a thread on Titanic GT3 last week which you may have seen). No idea whether this is more or less relevant on mags. Personally I think the proof of the pudding is that wheels have been powdercoated for years and I am not aware of any catastrophic failures that have been directly attributed to the powdercoating process.
You pays your money and takes your chances !
