964 C2 Tip brake calipers?

Good evening please comment if you can I have recently seen a 964 C2 Tip for sale which has been imported from Japan. Looking at the rear brake calipers they look very different from the other cars that I have seen elsewhere. My question is were these fitted just to Japan ordered cars or was it more to do with the production line specifications? Can I purchase new pads for these calipers or would it be best to replace them with the more standard ones?

If you have nay more information regarding the Japan imports I would very much like to hear your opinions and suggestions?

Many thanks Michael..

I can describe them as smaller units and triangular rather than the other type which are more rectangular in form ? Looking at some similar items on the internet seems it is part number 964 352 425 05.

Thank you for your interest.

Regards Michael..

Hi Micheal,

Yes those are the original rear calipers for a tiptronic (the calipers have 2 pistons). The square shaped ones that have 4 pistons were fitted to all C4 models and to the late 92/93 C2 manuals. As far as I know, all tiptronics had the small triangular calipers. If you have seen a tiptronic with the square calipers it means they have been changed at a later date.

My own C2 manual had the triangular calipers when I bought it but I upgraded them to square ones.

Thank you for that, is the upgrade a straight forward swap or is there any modification involved. The four piston ones do look much better than the ones with two as well.

Any other Japan import difference that I should be cautious of?

Regards Michael..

Here's my DIY writeup on the upgrade:

http://www.964uk.com/Documents/Brake%20Upgrade.pdf

It's not that difficult but the things to watch out for are, difficult to remove brake lines and used calipers that might have corrosion issues (all in the DIY). You also need to change the brake proportioning valve so that you make use of the bigger calipers (also in the DIY).

BTW for normal spirited driving the standard calipers are fine and perform very well. The biggest drawback with them is that the choice of brake pad is very limited.

From the little I know of Japanese 964s, they should be the same as a UK RHD car in their spec. However, just because it's being imported from Japan doesn't necessarily mean it was originally a Japan car......it might have been imported from somewhere else. I guess the other concern is how well it has been looked after whilst in Japan...I don't think there are that many Porsche specialists in Japan. But maybe someone else has better knowledge of the Japan situation than me.

That number is a 4 pot caliper

C2's changed halfway through M chassis from the little 2 pots to the C4 four pots, tip or manual, coupe or targa make no difference!

STEVE

Many thanks again for the information and the link it will be an interesting option if I purchase the car and then look at the modification. Keep you all posted!

Regards Michael..

Thank you so the number I got was from the 4 and not the two pot version.

Thank for the information.

Regards Michael..
