964 C4 (1989)diagnostic warning system

Earlier this year the clutch started slipping on my C4. On the way home the warning system came on, ABS and brake warning light. Clutch was replaced by local specialist garage, followed by an ABS relay and an ABS control unit. The problem still persisted. Sometimes all the dash warning lights came on and stayed on or started flashing like a fruit machine. It went back and had a replacement ECU fitted. Got the car back this week and although it drives OK the warning system still comes on every journey and the beeper cannot be silenced unless engine switched off and restarted. HELP!!

Campbell,

I have a similar issue (albeit not identical to yours) in that my ABS/PDAS warning (with ! alarm) comes on regularly at irregular intervals (if that makes sense!!). I've been through the loop of replacing ABS relay, wheel speed sensors etc. all to no avail. It was suggested to me recently (via Rennlist) that this problem as well as the famous "Christmas Tree" effect - all the lights on - can be caused by faulty ignition wires. The only real problem is that a new set is around the £220 mark as well as the fitting being a real PITA. I think I'm going to evenutally bite the bullet and get them replaced but it might be something you might like to consider too.

Cheers Dave.

Last few drives I have stopped and switched off to silence the beeper and reset the lights. The car then would not start (for first time ever). I put this down to a hot start but now wonder if its related to your suggestion about the ignition wires.??

Campbell,

This is almost EXACTLY my problem too. Often when I restart to reset the alarm my engine will not tickover - it stalls immediately. Given some gas it will run OK - just not tickover. After driving some while (maybe 20 mins) I find the tickover will return - and the ABS/PDAS alarm won't then re-occur until the car cools down overnight. Weird eh??

Regards

Dave
