964 cams in a 3.2 moter

I thought I'd try 964 cams (12-degree extra overlap, longer duration, but don't know if any more lift) so I had them put in during the top-end rebuild, thinking they will give me more mid-range torque.

Getting the car back within 10 days, so I'll keep you posted.

Has anyone else done it?

I believe its a nice change giving a little more topend zing without losing any midrange. It works best with complimentary changes such as chip, sports exhaust etc.

Very interested to hear your thoughts.

Yes, I'm interested in this mod Zia

In particular, high overlap cams sometimes lose a little low down torque, and what is often forgotten, is that unless you do "F1" style getaways, you have to get through this low torque zone to get to the sweet spot.

could you please keep the forum updated on your impressions?

Thanks

I don't think the 964 cams are all that radical - but Steve is certainly correct in general terms.

Apart from drivability issues (ie., loss of low rpm torque) the limiting factors as to what cams you can run in a 3.2 are (as I see it) threefold:

1. Valve/piston clearance - std CIS/Motronic pistons are fairly high dome. Ideally you want deep valve pockets in the pistons.
2. Common plenum induction - the airflow meter in the single throttle body intake manifold cannot cope with the pulses generated by large overlap cams.
3. High rpm weakness - to get the most from radical cams you need to pull higher revs. As a minimum you want stronger rod bolts, valve springs and valve retainers if not the full Carillo rod package.

If you solve all these problems - ie., RSR style JE pistons, Carillo rods, Raceware valves, springs and retainers, S type cams, individual throttle bodies, twin plug, SSI type exhaust and bespoke engine management - you have a motor producing 320hp at 7000+rpm. You also have a hole in your wallet to the tune of about £20k. Then again, if your car is a bit of a lightweight you have a power to weight ratio close to a new GT2 [:D].

Burnt out / short circuited electrics on left of luggage compartment.
No wonder it ran on after ignition key removed.

Sorry boys, no driving impressions yet!
Another week to wait and another grand to fork out.

If its not too rude to ask, can you also give us an idea of costs for the cams and install and where you brought them from? Have you had the existing cams reground or are these new cams ground from billets?

Thanks,
Richard

£300 - Re-ground cams
£160 - gaskets etc
£90 - valve guides £90
£135 - ring set
£130 - tensioner

J-reg white Nissan Primera base model, this week (good round corners!)
Value is 25p

At that price, it would be silly not to do it when completing a top end rebuild.

It seems to me that this is actually cheaper than the USA (for once). Webcam charge much more than this for a 20/21 grind on an exchange cam.

Thanks.
