964 Clutch replacement

Hi,
Have read quite a few posts for recommending specialists for Porsche servicing.. but what about more invasive / repair type stuff?
I am going to need the clutch doing in my '93 C2 964 fairly soon.
So engine out.. and no doubt a few other jobs while we are in there.
ie will be looking at:
Remove engine and box, replace clutch.
Remove left hand (and probably never been off and thoroughly seized) Heat exchanger and replace with a new one I have (Cat Flange is nearly corroded through at the bolts)
Replace engine oil lines
Check / replace fuel and hydraulic lines.
Couple of new tins
Full service while its out..
etc.
Later on I will be getting into suspension replacememt (KWV3)/ setup, probably a wee bit of bodywork.

All fine if you have a relationship with a garage. But this is name out of a hat stuff for me at the moment and that makes me pretty nervous. Would far prefer to do all myself.. but I am just not set up for major surgery at the moment.

Anyone got experience and recommendations for this kind of thing please?

Im in the North so does not really matter where in Scotland, I'll be travelling anyway.

Many Thanks,

Chris

Hi CHRIS

Clutch replacement is fairly straight forward to do if your mechanically minded and so is fitting new tins and the other jobs you wish to do.

Just cause its a porsche people get the fear that is difficult or different to other cars....it's not!

The engine/gearbox comes out easy and the bolts are pretty easy to get to...drive shafts are flange mount and just undo with 6 Allen screws. The most difficult thing is getting the car up high enought to pull the engine out from underneath and if you remove rear bumper then it's better.

If your mechanically minded (as I am!) then I would invest in the equipment needed to remove it myself and save on labour costs.

I think jzmechtech are around £1.1k just to replaces the clutch!!

I have a special jig I made to drill the exhaust mounting studs if one breaks whist undoing.

Btw engine tins are pricey as you will find out!! A couple of hundread quid each! And they are not even powder coated!!!
Oil line are not cheap either! I reckon at an indie the total cost of the work you want done will be over £2k and maybe closer to 3k.

Clutch is about £500
Tins 200-250 each piece....the side ones are cheaper at about £60
Major service will be cheaper whist engine is out so about £500
Oil lines can be 200 each...

So much better to do it yourself if you can

Back when I had a 964 I had the engine out for a new clutch and flywheel, done by Peter at Motortune in Shotts. I had already bought most of the parts as cheap as possible, which he was OK with. He cleaned up and painted the tins that were OK, and only changed the ones that were past it. Cleaned up and checked over the engine while it was out. Did some other minor repairs and servicing. Took photographs of what he was doing so I could see what was done. Invited me to come and see the car while the engine was out. Thorough, excellent job, exactly as it should be. Wasn't cheap obviously, but came to lss than I expected. Highly recommended.

If you only need to do the clutch just take the gear box out it's not a bad job to do, but if you have lots of time and other jobs to do drop the whole unit and do all the little jobs. Berny.

It's. C2 so that makes it easier.

I agree gearbox removal is straight forward and that allows better access for engine tin replacement.just the starter motor is a bit of a pain to undo and also lifting gearbox to get the first motion shaft in.

Still not to bad a job either way IMHO. Will save you a boat load of cash!

Thanks for the replies lads.

Tim, its not really a question of ability or confidence to do the job. So far I have found the car very satisfying to work on, I just dont have a suitable space to work in at the moment for an engine out job and I dont want the car to have to wait until that space is available... adding to my endless 'to do' list!
On the other hand.. experience has shown time and time again.. if I want something done the way I want it, I'd better do it myself.
Ive just had a VW serviced by a main dealer and suffice to say, I wont be going back.
Hence the question.. who to trust?

John - thanks for the insight on Motortune, I've read lots of positive about them and it is encouraging to hear your experience with them.

I would also recommend Motortune. Peter has an excellent knowlege of older cars. Good friendly service and not prohibitively expensive.

Stuart at SP Autobahn is also very good with the older aircooled cars. He has a nice 965 Turbo with big horsepower that he built his self. I am no fan of Motortune.

+1 for SP Autobahn, they are based in Stirling. Stuart checked over my Boxster when he had an Open Day for Tipec, and also one of each model present on the Day. I will be having the Boxster serviced there for sure.

Alan.

there are few good places in scotland,

autbahn, motortune, george morrison, there is one other in edinburgh whos name escapes me,

they all have their good points and bad points,

best thing is to agree price and scope of work and cost the contingency with them before agreeing what to do, or agree your budget.

I have just bought a 964 that had a new clutch at JZ maztech , 1990 964 C2 and the invoice was for around £2500, including a standard service, think the clutch including the dual mass flywheel was £1100 ish ??? work completed about 3 years ago.

one of the issues of dropping the engine is that normally the bumper mounts are all shot and end up having to be replaced which runs into a few hundered alone,

its possibly worth speaking to them all and getting quotes, I would think you are looking into the £3 to £4k mark for your work,

regards
scott.
ps, I use main dealer or motortune, depending on what work is being done,

Stuart at SP did almost exactly the work you're talking about on my '90 964 C2 last summer(if memory serves). He absolutely knows his 964s and I'd go nowhere else.

Quick update on this thread. Thanks all for the advice. I have just driven home from Motortune with a new clutch, a full major service and my rusted cat /HE flange problem sorted out.
Very impressed with Motortune, really nice people and exactly the sort of confident, open, helpful - and I must say very reasonably priced - service I was looking for.
Very very pleased with the result and would definitely recommend.

Drove home the long way via Glen Coe and Durness and back down the west coast. Car feels amazing.
