Mike,

I would sincerely hope that the vast majority of 964 owners would have it fitted. It surprises me that I see so many 964s where it HASN'T been done but it should be done - as a matter of some urgency - along with at least a check on the state of the distributor belt, if not a new belt into the bargain.

I fiited the vent kit to my car the first week I had it and had the belt checked when it had it's first service. Changing the belt is no mean feat and the OPCs will only offer to sell you an exchange distributor set at vast expense.

If you don't have it fitted - DO IT NOW. It's less than £10.

Regards

Dave

Thanks Dave,
Can I assume you picked up the kit from a main dealer and fitted it yourself.

Either OPC or Berlyn services for the vent kit...

Unless your a lazy git like me and put a airline t-piece midway through the pipe..

See John Miles website (www.porsche964.com) or .co.uk for info

Actually, I got mine from Bert at Berlyn Services (as Rob suggested). Fitting it is pretty easy although I was worried about prising out the metal plug from the main distributor. It's a pretty tight fit and I landed up poking a small screwdriver through it before I could get it out. I also adopted the "lazy git" solution that Rob mentioned and used a "T"-piece from the rear light unit to avoid having to remove the blower ducting to make a new hole. A few people have expressed concern at this solution but I can't believe the (small) volume of air is going to be significantly affected.

Dave

PS I just noticed Rob's link to John Miles' site is wrong - it's actually www.porsche964.co.uk. There is a write-up in the Technical Section about fitting the vent kit.

Did you end up purchasing a new combined unit? I've looked into this and it's seriously expensive!

Steve,

No - I didn't. Once I'd realised that the vent kit wasn't fitted I quickly got one from Bert and fitted it myself. When the car went to JZ Machtech for a service I asked them to have a look at the belt to make sure it was serviceable. It was. Changing the belt is a reasonable option if you can do it yourself but you need to have access to half way decent workshop facilities to do it. I can't even take a wheel off in my garage so I'm pretty limited in what I can do. If you get one of the independents to do the belt change it's not sooooo attractive since the labour cost is so high (for the sake of a 10p belt). It IS cheaper than the exchange distributor but you don't really save quite as much as you might expect.

I've just enquired into the cost of replacing just the belt.

JZM are quoting £185 + vat to do the job.

Like Dave said, not cheap considering the belt is not expensive.
