Just some reassurance needed....should I leave the engine idling whilst steam cleaning the engine in a 964 that doesn't look as though it's ever been previously cleaned !
cheers,
Nick.

No I never run an engine when steam cleaning, Put a rag or something in the air intake and use the lance round every where if its very dirty you will have to leave till the steam has cleared and re do, the top is usaualy the cleanest part you need the undertray off to do under the engine and box. You nead to jack it up high to do the underside and dont forget the wheel arches and oil tank. You can blow off with an air line to clear most of the water from the electrics and dont forget to take the rag out of the air intake then start and run to dry off.

Agree , I would perhaps warm the engine before cleaning so the heat help evaporates the moisture as it stands but running will force water into the engine air inlet and water doesn't compress ..so you would crack the heads and anything else etc $$$$ .

Also once you have steam cleaned it. All the metal work will now be raw and open to the elements so i would recommend protecting with something after , like PTFE Bike after spray or it will rust and corrode like hell. You could also have HT lead issues after, as the steam clean strips the protector off the leads and caps and these can arch after . The distributor cap can fill up as well ..been there and got the tea shirt with other engines ;-)

In the past I have placed a plastic bag over the dizzy and coils then taped up - I just avoided blasting over exposed electrical connectors etc. With no undertray either it helps avoiding any splashback of dirty hot water.
