I have just bought a 964 and wondered if any body can help me as to why rust has appeared on both sides of the front screen. I need to have the bonnet sprayed as well, can any one recommend who i should go to in surrey and what is envolved ie can the work be done without removing the windsreen?

thanks for any help

Mal,

The rust around the windscreen (both front and rear) is a failrly comon problem on the 911 in general. It's largely caused by rainwater collecting in the gully between the windscreen surround and the scuttle. The water doesn't evaporate very quickly from under the rubber and it just gets to work causing the rust over time. Since the rust starts under the rubber you will find it much worse there than in the area you can actually see. The solution is to cut out the affected area and weld in a new section (there are repair sections available).

As you can tell, the repair is not a quick cosmetic job and it does require the removal of the screen (which will often break anyway). There is little point in trying a quick fix since it will not resolve the fundemental problem.

Hope that helps.

Dave

Hi Dave,
Thanks for the info, sounds like the repair could be exspensive if the windsreen has to be replaced. Any idear of what cost i am looking at.

Hi Richard,

My car is a 1990 C4 Cab dark metalic blue not sure of the exact colour.
Both sides of the screen are the same. Do you have a similar problem.

Mal,

I'm afraid I can't give you any meaningful numbers since it's not something I've had to get done. I'm sure there are others on the forum who HAVE had it done so may be able to help on the cost. If you have to pay for the windscreen it will certainly mount up pretty rapidly - better if you can get the Insurance Company to pick up the screen bill.

From the look of the picture I'd be tempted to get it done sooner rather than later - it will only get worse. Judging from your other posts it seems like you have your fair share of problems with this car. Were you aware of the problems BEFORE you bought it or did you find out after the event???

Hi Dave,

I was aware of the screen problem before i bought it. I bought it as it had just had a replacement gearbox and the engine oil seals replaced and a major service. I thought it was good value at £11,000 for a 100,000 mile car!!

The rust problem can be caused by cowboy windscreen fitters. I had one who removed the screen by cutting out the rubber! He sratched the paintwork under the rubber then applied some solution to stop rust! He claimed he new what he was doing and advertised in a Porsche publication!! He did not get the screen to fit properly! That was after he had used a tube of sealer!
I then went to a windsceen specialist and asked for someone with experience 964 Porsches. He did a fantastic job after getting rid of all the sealer. He put in another new rubber and did not use any sealer! The first rubber should not have been cut up and should be reused if not damaged. He was able to pop the screen out without damage! After 3 weeks the scratched area had already started to rust . We treated it properly and have had no trouble since (3 years ago)

I thought the Porsche workshop manual (for 964) advocated cutting out the windscreen rubber for window removal........

Mind you it does also state that it is expected for the windscreen to get destroyed in the process too. [8|]

I have since had another screen stone chipped, and so replaced. The fitter popped the screen out with his feet and did not break it. he used the same rubber.
The time before as he had to use a new rubber, he soaked it in boiling water for about 10 mins. No sealer used and never had a leak!!

cost for a windscreen job, should be circa £500. I had ny rear done.

see my website for details.
