964 heater

In anticipation of a long trip with my old 964, I'm going through her to sort some niggling issues out. But I have a heating problem which I can't put my finger on!

cold engine =>turn on heater blower=>dial in temperature=>blower cuts out at one stop above 18degrees.
engine hot: =>heater blower cuts out the moment you reach the 24 degrees. turn the dial down and the blower goes again.

Anyone any ideas? Fuses, relays and connections all checked!

Many thanks in advance for your response!

Bert

Bert,

It sounds like the rear blower isn't running. You should be able to hear the rear blower spark into life as you wind the temperature up. If it doesn't start the cabin blowers will cut out almost immediately as there is no source of hot air for them to blow.

Rear blowers can fail due to problems with a fuse (should be a 30amp part) or the ballast (needed when the blower is running at slow speed) or the relay. The motor itself can also pack up due to worn/seized bearings etc. etc.

Regards

Dave

Could also be a faulty Potentiometer in the Heater control unit. These wear out over time... You could try spraying switch cleaner into the control knob itself but you would need to pop the unit out to access them properly...

Many thanks for your response: I'll be on the case the moment I have some time. (fingers crossed !!)

cheers,

Bert
