Can anybody advise me what is involved with, and how much should it cost to replace standard mirrors with better ones ?

What aspect of the mirrors do you want to improve?

Assuming you have the 'flag' type mirrors then the obvious choice is to change them for 'Cup' mirrors. Expect to pay at least £200 second-hand plus paint. On the down-side they get stolen. HTH. Cheers!

Cup mirrors are easy to install on the 964 but if your buying secondhand you need to make sure the bases are the correct ones. There are 2 types of base :-1 for 911 and the other type is for 944/968. Swapping out the bases can be done if need be though. I purchaced a secondhand set and compleatly stripped them down for painting but I had to make up a tool to split them. Was pretty straightforward though I wanted the colour to match when the mirror was pivoted. You need to do some small mods for the wiring to the motors. There are write ups about this on other sites such as rennlist

The bases issue is a bit more complicated that that. The bases are specific to LHD or RHD. If you put RHD bases on a LHD car the mirrors point in the wrong direction and vice versa is also true. The thing that makes buying them secondhand a bit of a gamble is that the sellers often will not say which they are - and sometimes may not even know. Unless you have access to the part numbers you will not tell them apart until you get them on the car.

For RHD the part numbers are 965.731.241.01 (L) and 965.731.242.00 (R). This is for the base only.
For LHD the part numbers are 965.731.241.00 (L) and 965.731.242.01 (R).

Happy hunting.

forgot about the lhd/rhd thing!!

The bases are available from porsche I believe but it is a bit of a pain to swap them. Like I said I made up a tool to do it but I have access to lathes etc at work.I am not sure if you can make LHD ones into RHD by just changing the base. Someone else might know, but i think the glass could be differant.
like Dave says it can be a bit of a gamble!

good luck

Tim

Tim,

I believe changing the bases IS all you need to do. There are flat and convex glasses available but TTBoMK most are fitted with flat glasses anyway.

Dave

I have the teardrops on my 944. With the flat glass, the vision is worse than with the flags.

Perhaps the OP is talking about whether you can get curved glass for his existing mirrors? That I don't know, as I've got teardrops....[&:]

It's a bit ambiguous to just ask "can I replace my mirrors with better ones". Do you mean better to see out of, or better to look at?

You also need to make some modifications to the wiring to attach the mirrors (different colour codes on car and mirror and two wires on the mirror need to be spliced together). There is a nice 911 and Porsche world article about the replacement. I have it as a PDF but don't know how to attach it to this post [&:]. E-mail me if you want a copy.

Don't buy them second hand off ebay (etc) - if you buy second hand get them from a recognised dismanteller. Otherwise you are just funding the low-life who go around pulling them off cars, damaging doors and wrecking looms.

In any case the typical ebay price is close to the OPC price where you will get the right part number for your car and you will know it will have working motors.

Great info there everyone, cheers. It was more for looks really [8|]. I saw something more about electrics and adapting wires etc. Think this might be a pro job, rather then a DIY (for me anyway!)

Thanks all.

Don't be so sure, mine were done by an OPC about ten years ago. They joined the wires with a half-hearted twist and wrapped them in sellotape for good measure. [&o]

If you do change them, try someone's for rear vision though. I'd say that curved glass is needed or they are noticeably worse than flags.

Honestly, it's an easy DIY. There should be five wires on the car and six on the mirrors. You need to splice two of the mirror wires together. Here's the sequence:

Car <--------------> Mirror

Brown-------------Brown
grey/green-------Brown
black/blue--------blue
red/white------red and white spliced
blue/grey------black

All easily achieved with bullet connectors:

I've finally been looking at my mirrors today, I haven't got these colours on my mirror, I have two browns on my mirror glass a white and brown, a white, a black and a black and brown. Can anyone help?

I bought a set of LHD cup mirrors for reasonable money from eBay (approved Porsche supplier BTW!!!). I then bought the RHD bases.

It took me the best part of a week to make the tool, swap the bases. Phew!

Removing the glass and painting them was staright forward.

The wiring was the easy bit and is simple.

HTH!

Chris

I've done the rest but this is what I have
Mirror glass Brown x 2
Motor adjustment Black, Black and Brown, White, White and Brown, I'm almost there !
