964 newbie

Hi

I am new to this forum and new to the world of porsches, i have fallen in love with the looks of the 964 and feel i need to own one. I have been looking around but have no real idea on what to look for or what to spend. any ideas/buying tips or any other information would be of great help

Standard advice, look at http://www.porsche964.co.uk/
This is the main source for many in the 964 owners group.

Beware that a 964 will be more expensive to look after than an SC or a 996 cos they changed so many parts on it from the previous model. Personally, I prefer the C2, but I like to play a little and the idea of being caught out (it does happen ! especially in the wet).

Don'y buy a cheap one to save a couple of grand cos you'll usually end up spending that much and more on bringing it up to the condition you wanted. Expect to pay about £14k for a reasonable G or H reg. Up to £17 or £18 from a garage or dealer.

Prices are holding firm and possibly rising, so you won't lose out much.
Be prepared to look around for a while and get one with a service history in the book and have it looked over by someone with knowledge of Porsches (not a mate or a normal mechanic, a Porsche expert). Good hunting.

PS - Where are you based ?

I am based near gatwick, what are the running costs like? are they good for a daily driver? I have friend who used to work at Parr performance that will help me with my searching

I use mine daily. Great. No issues at all.

I think the normal thought is allow £1,500 p.a. for service and repair.
All depends what needs doing. A clutch and service will soon get you to £1k.

I get about 22mpg from mine. Can drop to 14 on a track or in town.
Others get slightly more, but not heard of anything above 25mpg.

Hope this helps.
Trevor

I agree with all the above advice, but particularly the words of caution about running costs. I've had four Porsches over the last ten years and my 964 was by far the most expensive to look after, and it was only six years old when I got it. Even 993s are cheaper to run, not to mention 996s, Boxsters etc.

Buy the best you can afford.

Having said that, it was a great car with bags of character.

Good luck!

James, if you're like the majority of us, you will not regret getting a 964. I agree with the figures above. General running costs are not overly high for a car of this quality IMHO.

However, Trevor forgot to mention all the extra money you will be tempted to buy on upgrading various bits[8D]

Thanks for all the advice, what problems are they prone to then? what causes them to have high running costs? How many miles can you get to a tank of fuel?

Sorry for the real newbie questions

Welcome to the brotherhood [:)]

The most expensive regular cost will be new boots (and panties if you loose the back end) which my C4 consumes on a regular basis (must be the way I drive).

Oh and as for the panties, just go commando!

What doesn't seemed to have been mentioned is that 964s don't depreciate, almost all later models are still dropping in value. Add the depreciation to the 'lower' running cost, and the others will cost you more.
My first 964 cost 3000euros a year to maintain, restore & 'optimise' for 3 years. Then I got 6000e profit.
So 1000e per year to run a 964 for over 10000miles a year.
Simply the best !
Since then I've had 2 others & made a little money on each, so after over 4 years I'm at zero again.
Driven most other models, owned a Boxster previously and currently have a 968CS & 1973 911e.
The only one that ticks all the boxes.......the 964.
Another one will be in the garage soon.
Good luck,
Jon

Congratulations Neno. You did well finding a C2 coupe they seem to be in high demand and low in supply at the moment [:)]

We need more details about it and LOTS more pics [;)]

and where are you based?
