964 prices - quite strong

I didn't buy mine for an investment but I spent so long looking that even now I keep an eye on what's for sale. Recently I did a little survey of the 964 classifieds on Pistonheads.

The average price for RHD (39 cars) was £14,160 and £12,214 for LHD (7 cars).

The most expensive car was up for £18,995 (a coupe at a dealer) and the cheapest car was £9,500 (a private sale targa that looked very good and I'm mystified why it was so cheap). Both were RHD.

Turbos and RS models were excluded from my little survey.

Personally I would say that the prices of our cars are very healthy and I'm glad I got in mine now as they might even be on the up (there were a lot of cars around at less than £14K when I was looking in the winter).

agree, i bought mine back in sept and thought i'd maybe paid a little over the odds, but flicking through the magazines and internet proves that the average price NOW is slightly higher than i paid..

so i am well pleased, as like you i didn't buy it as an investment but because i loved the car...and still do[8D]

I would wreck the grade-curve with mine; I paid the bottom end of your scale for a LHD C2 coupe and am well chuffed!.. Its got a few things that need sorting out (most notibly right now the lack of oil) and its done more miles than the millenium falcon, but overall its a superb car and (touch wood) very strong and reliable...

I wasnt looking for an investment either, and as Im planning on keeping the car for as long as I can (till death do us part.. mine not hers) the mileage didnt bother me too much either... In some ways I was a little nervous, but looking at the market, I think I may have purchased the exact car (colour, options, etc) I always wanted right at the bottom of the slump...

Same here Ben. I got one of the colours I wanted, at the bottom end of the market prices. Like yourself, high miles don't bother me, especially since I've heard of plenty on Rennlist that are still strong cars with 200K miles. My aim was to buy it, do it up, drive it and love it[:)]. Knowing that the prices are strong and therefore that these cars are in such high demand is just a bonus.

I got mine about 18 months ago. I reckoned £14k was about average at the time. Also felt that if I paid less, then what I saved I would have to pay on fixing up anything I had not been told about. Seems I was about right, well, at least in my case.

Like everyone else, I got the car of my dreams, in the right colour and plan to keep it for a while. If I don't lose then I don't have to worry. With running costs, service, etc. at say £1,500 p.a. for a full and part service, then that is still cheaper than depreciation on any 'normal' car. All will need tyres, petrol, etc.

It seems like a good deal to me.
Enjoy, one and all !!

That's a bonus.
Paid £12k for my LHD 18 months ago and it's been fantastic.

It's only a matter of time before people realise how good the build quality and driving experience is. Compared to similar condition 993's they are a bargain.
And the noise at 6000 rpm is sensational....

This depreciation (or lack of it) is a big deal as its possibly the most expensive part of running a car. I reckon I've lost approx £15K on my Jag X-type in 3 years - lets say £100 a week. That pays for a lot of petrol/service bills and is another reason why I'll be replacing the Jaguar with a 964 rather than a new car.

I think prices will continue to rise, - there won't be any more of them - simple.

In the '80s I remember pre-impact cars which because of their mirrors / spoilers / trim were worth peanuts. People spent a lot of money destroying good 2.4's with fiberglass add-on's. 6" Fuchs - Scrap?[]

Today there is a trend to do the same with 3.2's and 964's.

Look at what has happened to good original 2.4's since then.

In ten years it will be the same with 964's.

Thats why last year I spent far too much [8|] on a 1993 Coupe.
I especially wanted:
- White (Its my age[8|]),
- Coupe
- 2 wheel drive
- Original Panels
- Black Trim
- Cup 1's
- Non-smokers Car
- History
- LSD

and I got it all locally (93k miles) except the Cup 1's, (it was on standard 16" space-savers[]) and the LSD.

I have since added the Cup 1's.

Now I need to weld the drivers door strap, as its got clicky.

Identical spec as mine except for very very very dark blue leather not black. Nice choice. White seems quite a poplular colour on the 964. Also seems popular on 3.2 as well.

As you say they don't make them anymore. They are getting to an age now where the more tatty cars are starting to go for scap. They are expensive to fix once they get like that plus expensive to run compared to other cheaper second hand cars so I can see decent ones becoming much rarer as the years go by.

BTW saw a lovely 3.2 today and the owner wants to backdate it [:(]

Ian.

Ian,
I was very close to a 3.2 before the 964 decision. It was farther away and I was busy, then it was sold.
The 964 is easier to live with, (it has a heater[8|]) but the 3.2 has a purer feel. But a purer feel at 100mph in a crosswind is not always a good feel[:D] eh?.
Backdate? Recreate? Rose-Tint?
