964 RS vs 993 RS running costs

Hi everybody,
New to the board. I'm considering the purchase of a 964 or 993 RS (or cup car with a reg) for club racing and track day playing. I used to race a 993 Cup in the US a few years back and remember consumable costs to be very high (every week-end was 2 sets of slicks, a set of Pagids, an oil change, and an engine/gearbox rebuild every 50 to 75 hrs)... However, I have the itch to play again and was wondering if anyone had any perspective on running costs of 964 vs 993 RS/RS CS/Cup cars as well as their competitiveness in the club and where the most fun can be had.

Hi , I think consumable costs are mainly down to the driver rather than the car [;)]
There should not be any sizable difference between the models you list ie 964RS vs 993RS as similar weight and engine performance capability. By comparison , there's a lot more difference between different Pagid pad types and different tyre compounds for example. The 993RS will cost more to acquire and, all things being equal , when properly set-up should have the edge on the 964RS....the CS models are rarer and more expensive again .
If bang per buck is important then a (properly) used lhd 964RS is hard to beat. If I were you , rather than relive past experiences I'd go for a modern track day car - the GT3 Mk 1
 
Thanks for that. That's reallu useful perspective. I like the idea of old oil cooled ones as I feel that they will not depreciate anymore, don't need a PST2 to set up etc... I will start thinking about it though.

The only major difference is that the 993 engine has hydraulic lifters for the tappets, so some potential cost saving on servicing there; also, different rear suspension and from my experience, easier to drive.

I think it's just down to a matter of preference whether it is a 964 or 993RS.

You must stop banging on about how "easy" these 993RS are to drive.
I'm starting to get a complex and wonder if I should chop mine in for a Renault Scenic which would clearly be more of a challenge.[:D]

John just remind Mel where he was in most of last years Oulton piccies compared to an rsr very similar colour to u rs ......................993 of course !

Ah, that explains a lot, Mark -in fact I believe it was his sock suspenders -that would explain why he caught me up between the corners....[:D]
 
To be fair Melv, a good friend of mine has a nice 964RS and laps at a similar pace to me.When ever I jump in his RS, as a passenger, he does appear to have to work very hard, with the car feeling edgy and ready to bite, compared to the 993 which feels far more stable and planted at similar speeds.
So I do agree that the 993RS is perhaps a more predictable car.
As a matter of interest, I find the 993 also more stable than the GT3, which is probably down to the weight differential.

I noticed that you also have a GT3RS - I'm assuming it's the street car, perhaps wrongly.
If it is, have you put it on the track? How does it compare to your 993?
