964 - Shortened number plate recesses

Im looking to clean up the lines (ever so slightly) of the 964 by shortening the number plate recesses front and rear. I read in the January 2009 issue of 911&PW that a lad called Greg Howell did just that with his 964. He mentioned that the RS America has a shorter rear centre section (than the UK RS model) and that a euro front bumper has a shorter plate recess.

So, anyone know where I can find either part?

This looks a tough one, as my own searches of eBay and Google haven't come up with much!

Can anyone help?

Chris

Chris,

There's a bit of rumour going on here.

As far as the rear bumper central section is concerned, there are only 3 types. The standard Euro C2/C4 (964.505.123.00), the RS type (964.505.123.02 used on Turbo 3.6 as well) and the standard US type (964.505.123.01) which is fitted to all US cars including the RS America. The US cars have a rectangular licence place, hence the smaller width recess.

The front bumper depends on the headlight washer. The RS America and Euro RS use the version without headlamp washers (964.505.113.00). All others (US and Euro) use the standard bumper (964.505.113.01). The Turbos have a dedicated front bumper because of the front flares. Many US States don't use a front licence plate and many people fill the mounting holes with the plugs from Bumperplugs.com.

Hope that helps.

Thanks fo the speedy reply as always Dave!

Right, if I have this corect.

If I buy a standard US centre section (any idea where from?!) that would shorten the rear plate recess (?)

And for the front can I buy a US bumper without the plate recess or do the folks in the states just leave the recess in and fill the mounting screw holes with blanks when they run without a plate? If so, ill have to get to a bodyshop if im going to make this happen...

Chris

Chris,

As you can see from the attached picture (lifted from Rennlist), the US centre bumper is substantially different and uses different light units to the side rather than above the licence plate. The front bumper is no differnt in the US - it's just that some States don't use front licence plates and the holes are usually plugged - pre-painted bumper plugs are available from www.bumperplugs.com.

ETA. I would imagine you could order the US bumper section from your OPC although I guess they would have to order it from Germany. I would sit down before you ask the price!!

Regards

Dave

Greg's motor is spot on (although I havent seen it in the flesh). He actually shortened the front plate recess himself. The benefit of being a painter in a top bodyshop I suppose! ;)

Chris

Thanks for the heads-up Graham. I contacted Jasmine and they sold the item on eBay recently. A new one would be about £350 to my door :(

Does anyone know of any US breakers that would deliver to the UK?

Chris

I'd post on the 964 section of Rennlist as I bet someone in the US would happily swap their US version for a Euro version. I've seen people ask about this before as they like the "Euro" look over there. Should then only cost you postage.

Cheers,

Tim.
