964 Speedometer

Hi,

My name is Jamie and I have resently become a proud owner of a 1992 964.
The car is an import from Germany and has the speedo in KPH.
Does anyone know if it is possible to change the backing (gauge) of the speedo to MPH?

Also, I notice on the engine lid it does not say Carrera 2 is this a European thing?? (no badges).

Thanks

Jamie

Jamie,

There are quite a few companies selling coloured gauge backgrounds so I'd guess it's possible to get black ones. However, bear in mind that, if you do it, the odometer will still read kilometers and, to the uninformed, it will appear that your car has travelled that many MILES rather than kilometers.

My car is also a German import and I find my mental arithmetic just gets better and better!!! It's really no big deal, particularly as the KPH speedo has the 30mph equivalent marked in red.

The real solution is to change the whole thing to a new MPH speedo - but you're talking a few £££££!!!

Regards

Dave

switched the kph speedo to a mph one on my 993 for a mere (?) £200.....

IIRC design911 have a few used ones in stock...

Thanks Dave for your reply.

One other item I mentioned in my original message was the lack of badging to the engine lid of my car. I notice from the picture of your German import that it is badged.
Mine has no Carrera 2 on the rear, I was not sure if this was a German thing...no badge?

Thanks

Jamie

Jamie,

I wouldn't rush to judge ANYTHING on the basis of my car - there is very little that's standard on mine!!!

However, I suspect that the badging IS standard although there's every chance the German dealers would offer the option to delete the badge (a la BMW) - they are only stuck on with double sided sticky stuff. It's pretty easy to get them and put them on yourself. I actually bought new ones for my car from Design 911 - I think the "Carrera" was about £14 and the "4" was about a fiver!!

Hope that helps,

Regards

Dave

All 964 types had the option of deleting the rear badge at build stage. As do most if not all current models in the Porsche range. If you would like to know what spec your car was delivered from the factory with, then contact Porsche Cars GB at Reading, quote your chassis number and for around £50 they will send you a very detailed sheet containing all the particulars relating to your cars original delivered spec including all options fitted etc.
