I have just started to have problems starting my 964.When i turn the key i get a click only. After about 3 turns the car starts,i have tried the dme relay.Has anyone any ideas what the problem might be?.

What state is the battery in? Often a culprit with these cars. Make sure battery is fully charged and keep it on a conditioner, especially if the car is only used once in a while.
Keeping a spare DME Relay (try Bert Gear - Berlyn Services) for one (or two).

Cheers,

In order - is the battery in good shape, if so, swap out the dme relay, if not that, then it is likely the starter motor, either a bad earth or just knackered (esp if it is the original). Clicks are normally the 'sign' of the starter motor not going.

Sounds like the starter motor is at fault. Sometimes the gear on the end of the motor can become contaminated with oil or grease. This make the pre engagement stick resulting in the same problem you describe. I would remove the starter motor and give the gear and shaft a good clean using a non oil based product. let us know how you get on

I had a similar problem on a boxster and removing the starter and lubricating it sorted the problem. I got a local auto electrical place to check it over for me; they checked continuity/resistance of the windings, condition of the magnets, bearings, etc. then lubricated it all and cleaned up the posts. Worked perfectly after that..

If you're near Leicester they are on frog island next door to the MG specialist (can't remember his name). They did the work on the boxster starter for £10, and completely refurbed (inc new bearings, windings, magnets) a dyno from my midget for £15

Could also be the leads for the starter, if connections aren't good, then you often get a solenoid click, but no further action. Earth lead IIRC is usually the culprit
