964 Suspension Upgrade?

I've just bought a 964 C2 and I am looking to upgrade the suspension. I plan to use the car for trackdays as well as on the road. Any advice would be appreciated?

Mario

The KWv3 is receiving some superb reviews which is why I plumped for it on my 944. I must say i'm extremely impressed, it has brought the feel of the car right upto date. They have valving in the shock absorbers that effectively means you have a lower damping rate on high frequency bumps like you get on road or trackside kirbing , and much higher rate on low frequency bumps to resist body roll. It is quite stiff but the ride quality is not too bad for road use as a result of the valving. The struts are also made of stanless steel rather than chome plated like other kits so no rust. It's defineately worth a look. Much much better than OEM M030 or uprated stuff.

I chose not to do it myself as the 944 has rear torsion bars so you have to re-index them to set the ride height which is an axel off job dealing with lots of nuts and bolts that havn't been disturbed for 20yrs. Too much work for me to tackle on my own with my rudimentary tools. Not sure what the suspension setup is on the 964 but if you don't have a rear torsion bar setup like the 944 then it's a simple bolt-out / bolt in replacement with a re-alignment afterwards.

Having said that even if you do have rear torsion bars and you want to maintain your current ride height then you can simply replace your current struts.

I used Promax Motorsport. Superb job they did too. Some photo's of the installation:-

And the rear coilovers. In the standard setup there is just a shock absorber here. I also replaced the rear torsion bars for 25mm dia M030 ones. By the way, not sure how it compares to other kits but it is a pretty pricey upgrade. The basic kit for the 944 is £1400 plus a good 12Mh to install plus a few bits and bobs that need replacements (such as old and tired bushes).

Does anyone have experience of fitting KW suspension to a 964? Or alternative adjustable suspension. I understand that JRZ or H&R are also popular. Any comparisons etc would be interesting.

Mario

Might be worth talking to Promax to see if they have installed on any other cars. I know that KW doesn't seem to be that well known, I think they are relatively new on the market. They are big on GT3's and they are always running a 997 round the ring breaking alsorts of lap records. Their website is:-

Info on the product for the 964:-

I fitted KW variant 3's to my 964RS and i'm very pleased with them. They are as good on the track as the standard set up and better on road which makes for an ideal riding RS as far as i'm concerned. KW sell variant 3's in 2 types for the 964, one is specific to the RS (which is designed to fit the standard RS uniball mounts) and the other to fit the standard 964. One thing to watch is that early 964's have shorter rear strut tops and later suspension will not fit without modification. Try John Miles excellent website www.porsche964.co.uk for more suspension info.
The standard RS suspension is very good however and could also be worth considering if your tracking regularly, however you will have to buy the uniball mounts with this set up and that add's £££ to the cost.

my cars running H&R springs on adjustable bilsteins, and they are great.. a little hard on back roads, but never fail to amaze me on smoother tarmac, and outstanding on track

I've gone for RS spec suspension including rollbars. I decided against adjustable suspension on the basis that I am unlikely to change the settings very often or at all. Thanks for all your advice. I'll let you how it works when I get the car back in a few weeks.

I read something recently about RS rollbars fouling the bodywork on C2's/C4's in certain setting positions or something?.. Might be worth checking out; a roll bar bottoming out on your way through a corner could be very scary!..
Of course if you brought aftermarket RS spec/style ARB's I imagine they should be ok..

May I suggest you look on Rennlist & Pistonhaeds? These particular threads are very relevant to you they are both from a fellow UK-based 964 newbie who is asking about suspension mods:
