964 TAIL LIGHT MYSTERY

I have a 1989 C4 which has suffered from the usual crazed tail lights. I intend to try to source better ones second hand. I purchased one on Ebay earlier in the week which has the part number 964.631.907.00 and the existing light unit has the number 964.631.403.00.
When I compare the 2 lights side by side the 907.00 one appears to be shorter by about 7cm and a slightly different curve, however it appears to fit in the car.
My local OPC states that the 964.631.907.00 is a superceeded part number and both should be the same.
Has any one else experienced this and could help shed some 'light' on this?

Thanks Paul

Can email photos but not sure of how to upload them

Paul,

The light unit you're referring to is the left hand combined unit with brake/tail/stop/indicator. The 907 part is a later design which has a small grille above the lens which was introduced to improve the venting in order to stop the build-up of condensation inside the light. The later unit is designed to NOT use the rubber gaskets but I'm surprised that it should be as much as 7cm shorter - are you sure you don't mean 7mm??

I bought both left and right units for my car soon after I bought it and noticed the difference.

Hope that helps.

Regards

Dave

[FONT=zurich ex bt"]Dave, I think I now have it sussed. I require 964.631.911.00 and 964.631.913.00 which are gaskets that fit either side of the later type lamp as the early lamp had a gasket the full way around and the later type dosen't. Thanks for your help - again.[FONT=verdana, geneva"][FONT=verdana, geneva"][FONT=zurich ex bt"][FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"][FONT=zurich ex bt"] Paul[FONT=verdana, geneva"][FONT=verdana, geneva"]

Paul, these are what the gaskets for the later version of tail light look like:

They cost about £16!

If you're good with a stanley knife you can remove the old full gasket from your old light, cut the ends off (so they look like the above) and glue them onto to your new light.

But don't try to use the old full gasket on the new light as it won't fit unless you stress the lens plastic which could have disastrous consequences.

Thanks, thats what I have ordered. I was very confused at first when the 2 taillights differed in size so much, thanks Paul

I can see the problem!! it looks weird to me too. Post some pics when you get the gaskets and fit them to the lights. I am interested to see this.

Just got home tonight to the same issue. Lights and reflector delivered courtesy of Porschapart. The numbers on the light boxes are the same as the newer version quoted. Have not tried to offer them up but am amazed at the difference on the photos linked to on this thread, that looks more than a cut down gasket will fit. Maybe the referred to different curvature fixes the issue ?

Anyway, interested to see pictures of the new lights in situ

thanks
