964 targa

I have at long last seen a fabulous 964, which I am seriously interested in. Its a 91 model H plate with 73k miles with air con & tear drops.

The one matter that bothers me is the targa roof. How protective is it ie is it properly water proof is it? Given our sometimes rather wet summers/winters, will be suitable as an all year round car? Or should I consider a coupe?

Targa roof not problem for me after 18 months. Mine is ia bit tatty around edges, becasue it will be if you fold it up oten during the summer, and a bit noisy but even then, only once under heavy rain did my wife point out that her side of the lining was a bit damp inside.

There are other items to worry about, such as engine condition, which are more important. I will cget my roof refurbished to as new this year by Southbound somewhere in Hampshire. They have been highly commended for all interior work on this & other forums and will probably charge me £600 ish for as new on the targa frame and they do a lot of Porsche work on much older models too.

You will probably get every attached to the this, becasue you can still do 1** plus with the roof off: it gets breezy and a bit loud but it will only be your hair that complains

Many thanks for your advice. The roof on the car that I have looked at is in good nick and there was only very slight noise when I drove it. I guess you're right in that the more you open/close it, the more likely you could get a slight leak. However, the quality seemed better than I thought it would be.

As far as the engine is concerned, I believe it was replaced by Porsche. It looks and sounds OK but I will be having it fully inspected.

Shaun have you considered doing the work yourself. I got a kit from Southbound for less than a £100.00 which included all materials , glue and instructions. Southbound supply new rain gutters too for about £30.00 each. It took a friend and I about 5 hours to make my Targa roof look like it had just left the factory, it's not rocket science.
 
I had my roof recovered nearly 2 years ago by southbound and it still looks like new.

It has only leaked twice, touch wood. The first time was in torrential rain on the M6 in October 2002 and the second was when I forgot to put it on and we got caught in a thunderstorm returning from Walton Hall last year.[:D][:D]

I think a lot of it depends on how you refit the roof after removing it.

I'm sure the 964 can't be that different from a 3.2.
 
Bang on Nicola if the roof is in a good state of repair and the seals are fitted properly then a Targa is pretty water tight apart from the odd dribble down a window in extreme conditions. Mine previously lived for many years outside in allsorts of lousy weather and remained dry. One tip is to vaseline the seals regularly as they absorb the vaseline and swell to form a tight fit ...oo-er.....
Some people however can't live with the 'wind noise' at higher speeds so a coupe is better in that respect. However in summer a Targa can't be beaten , it has great looks and you have 'wind in the hair' motoring.
Now if only I could get mine back on the road!
 
You just have to be carefull of sunburn with the roof off......

Factor 20 now lives in the glove box[:D]

The cost and time savings sound good, better than missing a roof whilst Southbound have it. The cons are my lack of ability with anything more complicated than a hammer & screwdriver, even me draining oil results in a mess.

I have seen guidelines on (I think) type911 site: currently I am still surviving the wind and rain and am not too conscious of the ragged edges that have appeared i.e. I was currently taking the do nothing option. In view of the great interior views of your car I may take action and follow your roof repairs route

It looks like a bit of interpretation is needed here. As you say, the "zis" looks like it should be "ZLS", where the "L" is indicating a 1990 production. Bear in mind that 1990 production means anywhere between August 1989 and July 1990. With the depressed market in the late 80's and early 90's it's not unreasonable to expect that a 1990 car could be held in stock until someone wanted to register it as a 1991 car. The engine number looks OK - although it should be 62Lxxxxx

The serial number - 411185 - would seem to indicate a ROW C2 Targa Tiptronic although, according to Adrian's book 410322 was the last. There seems to be a great deal of debate about these serial numbers so maybe you need to take it with a pinch of salt.

The car is a Targa 2 with a manual gearbox RHD--so it shouldn't be ROW unless at sme point it came from Singapore or Japan.

As you say the cars weren't selling in the early 90's so it could well have sat on a forecourt for some time.

On the Vin number for the ROW it should start with WPOZZZ
the only variations are for the American market which areWPOAxx for a coupe, WPOBxx for Targa and WPOCxx for a convertable.
